Russian Prime Minister says rouble's fall is not a good in the long term

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev says that the devaluation of the rouble is not good in the long term.


Sanctions and falling oil prices are among the factors that have contributed to the rouble losing over 40% of its value against the dollar over the course of the year.

UN CALLS FOR PROSECUTIONS OVER US TORTURE

Senior United Nations officials are calling for the prosecution of US officials after a report detailing CIA interrogation of al Qaeda suspects.

The Senate report describes techniques used as 'brutal'.

The UN's Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Counter-Terrorism Ben Emmerson says figures from President George Bush's administration should be prosecuted.

And while questions are still being asked about the UK's role in the rendition of some terror suspects for the US - current British Prime Minister David Cameron is condemning the practices outlined in the Senate report.

Russian opera star shocks by posing with Ukraine rebel flag

Internationally renowned Russian soprano Anna Netrebko has stirred controversy by posing with a flag used by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine.


The move came as the opera star donated thousands of dollars to the central opera house in the main separatist stronghold, Donetsk.


While some fans have been praising the singers' actions, others have branded the singer "stupid" and "naive".

'WEATHER BOMB' HITS UK

A so-called 'weather bomb' is hitting the UK with strong winds and high waves causing serious travel disruptions.

More than 17,000 people in the Western Isles of Scotland have been left without power.

Many trains and ferries to the west of Britain have been cancelled.

The 'weather bomb' is a deep low pressure system moving slowly eastwards bringing gales - before another storm front's expected to move back across the UK on Thursday.

Forecaster Jim Bacon from WeatherQuest says people with travel plans will need to be careful.

The United Nations has launched a record aid appeal to help nearly 60 million people affected by conflicts and crises.

California's historic drought result of nature, not climate change

A new U.S. federal report says nature is mainly to blame for California's historic drought, not global warming.

The study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found an increase in greenhouse gases may make droughts worse in future -- but is not the principal cause.

Former POW Senator reacts to 'CIA torture report'

US senator John McCain, a former prisoner of war who was himself tortured during the Vietnam conflict, threw his full support behind the release of the Senate's report into the CIA's so-called enhanced interrogation and detention program.

CIA, Republicans reject torture report

America's Central Intelligence Agency is rejecting the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee report on torture as incomplete and selective.

British royals lay flowers, leave note at 9/11 Memorial

Britain's Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have left a bouquet of flowers and a hand-written note at Ground Zero in New York - scene of the 9/11 Al Qaeda attacks on America.


In a visit to the September 11th Memorial in Lower Manhattan they paid tribute to the nearly 3 thousand victims, including 67 British citizens.
