Washington deadlock over key agency funding

U.S. lawmakers have been unable to reach a political compromise to keep the U.S. Department of Homeland Security funded.

The U.S. Senate approved a bill to keep the agency open through September, but a slightly different measure failed in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Leonard Nimoy's Final Tweet -- Live Long and Prosper

The death of  Leonard Nimoy, the man who played  the resolutely logical first officer Mr. Spock in the Star Trek franchise,  has prompted an outpouring of grief on social media.

Many Nimoy’s legions of fans pointed to his own final tweet, which has been retweeted more than 100 thousand times. 

Nimoy died in California on Friday morning (local time) aged 83.

Spaniards arrested for fighting in East Ukraine

8 Spaniards have been arrested for allegedly fighting with pro-Russian rebels in East Ukraine.

9 dead in Missouri shootings

The shooter and 8 victims are dead in a small town south of St. Louis, Missouri.

One additional victim was injured and transported to hospital, while another appears to have died of natural causes.

4th quarter US GDP revision slips

Economic growth in the United States shrank more than initially
thought with revised gross domestic product up at 2.2% for the 4th
quarter.

This is down from the initially estimated 2.6% gain recorded last

Lloyds begins paying dividends

Lloyds Banking Group, which is 23.9% owned by the British Government, has said it will resume paying dividends to shareholders for the first time since the financial crisis in 2008.


It comes as the company announced a full year statutory profit of 1.8 billion pounds.

Britain's Security faces questions over Jihadi John



It's understood that British counter-terrorism officers were aware of Jihadi John's real identity from as early as last September, though still decline to reveal his name for operational reasons.


Mohammed Emwazi was known to Britain's MI5 intelligence agency, raising questions over why and how was he allowed to travel into Syria without being stopped.


The UK's Prime Minister David Cameron however, has backed the work carried out by UK intelligence agencies and urged the public to support the work done by the UK's security forces in keeping the country safe

Widow of hostage killed by 'Jihadi John' says she wants him brought to justice

The widow of a Briton killed by Mohammed Emwazi, the man now identified as Jihadi John, says she wants him arrested alive.

Dragana Haines, widow of aid worker David Haines, says she wants him to face justice in Britain.

Her comments come as questions grow over the dealings Britain's intelligence services had with Emwazi before he travelled to Syria in 2012.

German parliament approves 4 month bailout extension for Greece

Germany's lower house of parliament has approved Greece's bailout extension, with 542 MPs out of 587 total voting in favor.  

The approval followed a heated debate among MPs at the Bundestag, about Germany's role in rescuing eurozone countries.

LLOYDS IN PROFIT AND RESUMING DIVIDENDS

Bailed-out British bank LLoyds has reported profits and confirmed it will resume paying dividends to shareholders for the first time since the financial crisis.

Its full-year statutory profits came in at £1.8bn ($2.7bn) and it will pay a dividend of 0.75 pence per share.

Lloyds Banking Group is now 23.9% owned by the taxpayer, after starting to sell off shares taken by the government when it was bailed out.

Lloyds profit contrasts with the other rescued British bank RBS which reported a loss on Thursday and is still majority state-owned.

But there's controversy over a total remuneration package worth £11m ($17m) going to the bank's chief executive, Antonio Horta-Osorio.

QUESTIONS GROW OVER 'JIHADI JOHN' INTEL CONTACTS

Questions are growing for UK intelligence services about contact they had with Mohammed Emwazi - now revealed as the London man known as 'Jihadi John' after a series of beheading videos.

It's reported intelligence agencies may have been in contact with him up to a dozen times before he traveled to Syria in 2012, going on to join the Islamic State.

The Londoner's identity was revealed on Thursday after he first appeared in a video last August featuring the murder of US journalist James Foley.

Associates of Emwazi's insist he was radicalised by harrassment by British intelligence officials.

An international team of astronomers reported the discovery in the current edition of the journal Nature.

Bin Laden aide found guilty of US Embassy bombings

Saudi national Khalid al-Fawwaz has been found guilty in a New York
court for his role in plotting the 1998 US embassy bombings in East
Africa.

224 people died in the twin attacks carried out by Al-Qaeda in Kenya
and Tanzania. The deadliest prior to the attacks on September 11th
2001.

US condemns ISIS-abduction of Dozens of Christians in Syria

At least 220 Syrian Christians are now being held captive by Islamic State terrorists.  

A British human rights group said they were abducted in the past three days from ten villages in the country's northeast.  

US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki condemned the attacks which included the burning of homes and churches.

Speaker Boehner defends invitation to Israeli PM

The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John Boehner is defending his invitation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address a joint session of the U.S. Congress next week.

Argentina's Congress votes to dissolve intelligence agency


Argentina's legislators have voted in favor of shutting down the country's current intelligence agency, and replacing it with a new one which will be accountable to Congress.

US raises cyber-threat posed by Russia


Russia, China, Iran and North Korea pose the greatest cyber-threat to the United States, according to an annual US intelligence report.

Addressing the Senate Armed Services Committee the director of national intelligence, James Clapper said Russia has replaced China at the top of that list.

Russia and Ukraine are at odds over gas payments

The Islamic State militant known as 'Jihadi John' has been named as a young British man who was known to intelligence services.

The man who has appeared in several IS beheading videos is understood to be Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwait-born Briton from west London.

He's thought to be in his mid-20s and to have traveled to Syria around 2012 and later joined the Islamic State.

Asim Qureshi from activist group CAGE, which campaigns against the war on terror and had contact with Emwazi before he left for Syria, accused UK security services of radicalising him through harrassment.

Mr Qureshi became emotional as he spoke of the young man he had been in contact with before he traveled to Syria.

Bin Laden documents shown in New York court

A court in New York has seen documents seized after a raid on the
compound of Osama Bin Laden in 2011 containing details of planned
attacks.

This comes during the trial of a Pakistani man Abid Naseer who's
accused of helping al-Qaeda plan attacks in England and the United
States.
