China issues stern warning after US Navy ship sails near disputed island

The Chinese defense ministry is warning the sailing of the U.S. navy destroyer Curtis Wilbur was a severe violation of the law.

Just last week, the chief of the U.S. Pacific command confirmed that additional freedom of navigation operations for the South China Sea were in the works.

Kerry: "real and present" opportunity at Syrian talks in Geneva


US Secretary of State John Kerry says there is a “real and present” opportunity for talks about the future of Syria to make progress this week in Geneva.

He was speaking just hours after at least 50 people were killed in blasts that targeted a Shia Muslim shrine south of Damascus.

The attack was claimed by Islamic State, and EU foreign policy chief Federiga Mogherini said the blasts were “clearly aimed” at disrupting the process in Geneva.

But speaking in Washington, Mr. Kerry urged all sides to embrace the opportunity to begin talks, and start the process of bringing Syria’s crisis to an end.

Beloved British broadcaster Terry Wogan dead at 77


One of Britain’s most beloved broadcasters, Sir Terry Wogan, has died at the age of 77.

His family say he waged a short battle with cancer.

He was known globally for his role as the host of the Eurovision Song Contest, and for overseeing the launch of Britain’s “Children in Need” charity which raised millions for the under-privileged.

Born in Ireland, Terry Wogan became a household name in Britain where he had a 50 year career on BBC radio and television.

One of his most memorable broadcasts was in December 2009 when he signed off as breakfast-time host on BBC Radio 2.

3 arrested over death of British pilot in Tanzania

Tanzanian officials are telling AFP (Agence France-presse) that three have been arrested for their role in the death of Roger Gower, a British national who was working as a pilot for a conservation fund.

A spokesman for Tanzania's national parks said the person who shot down the helicopter was clearly on a poaching spree, as three elephants were also found shot dead.

50 dead in attack on Syrian shrine

At least 50 are dead following a series of explosions at a Shi'a muslim shrine south of Damascus.

The attacks come as representatives from the Assad regime, opposition groups and the international community gather in Geneva for proximity talks.

Iowa caucuses to winnow US Presidential field

Republicans and Democrats in the American state of Iowa are preparing to vote in elections that will help decide which candidates battle it out in the race to succeed Barack Obama in the Oval Office.

The Iowa Caucuses represent the first votes cast in the US Presidential election, and analysts are waiting to see whether Donald Trump can hold on to the lead he’s established in opinion polls when Republicans cast their ballots.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton is under enormous pressure from Senator Bernie Sanders, a socialist from the state of Vermont.

Leaked Documents: US and UK Monitored Secret Israeli Airforce Communications

According to documents attributed to leaks by the former American intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, British and American Intelligence agencies have monitored secret communications by the Israeli Air Force. 


The information, published in the online publication the Intercept and in the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel shows the hacking operation dates back to 1998.

UK 'CLOSE TO REFORM DEAL' WITH EU

Britain is reportedly edging towards a deal on reform of its relationship with the European Union.

It's understood London and Brussels are close to agreeing a so-called 'emergency brake' that could allow it to stop some benefit payments to migrants.

But to activate this emergency brake, Britain would need approval from other member states.

David Cameron in Brussels to save EU renegotiation deal

British Prime Minister David Cameron is to visit Brussels on Friday for a working lunch with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker - as he seeks Juncker’s help in convincing other countries to agree to reforms of Britain’s relationship with the European Union.

Affluenza Teen sent back to Texas faces charges

American teenager Ethan Couch, known for using the so called “Affluenza” defense  after he killed four people in a car crash, is back in Texas following his deportation from Mexico.

Couch and his mother had fled the country to escape U.S. prosecutors after the eighteen year old allegedly violated his probation.

UN says intra-Syrian talks will go on as planned in Geneva

The UN has confirmed that talks aimed at finding a resolution to the

there's been no confirmation of which parties will attend the summit.

Italy Would Lead Military Action Against Islamic State in Libya

The US Defense Secretary has indicated that any future military action against Islamic State militants in Libya would be led by Italy.

Ash Carter also said that the formation of a unity government in Libya would be helpful, enabling more effective international military support.

The White House is not making an explicit commitment, but officials have said military options are being seriously considered.

US: N Korea Preparing Possible Space Launch

US officials have said North Korea may be preparing for a possible space rocket launch.

Citing intelligence suggesting increased activity around a satellite launching station, officials added that a test could even take place within a couple of weeks.

Syria talks set to get underway in Geneva

Talks aimed at launching a political resolution to the nearly five-year long Syrian crisis are supposed to get underway in Geneva.

Ahead of those negotiations, at least one opposition group meeting in Riyadh said their delegation would not be boarding flights for Geneva because their demands on ending air strikes and aid blockades have not been met.

In Washington, Obama spokesman Josh Earnest said the American demand that Bashar al-Assad end his role as President of Syria is unchanged.

US confirms discussion strategies for Libya with allies

The White House is confirming, it is discussing with Western allies how they might take the fight against the Islamic State to Libya.

Libya's defence minister said earlier if a unified government cannot be formed, Western powers are prepared to fight the Islamic State inside the country, even as the Islamic State increases attacks.

With a political vacuum inside Libya since the end of the Qaddafi regime nearly five years ago, White House spokesman Josh Earnest confirmed the talks.
