NK leader set to meet Putin in Russia

The North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is set to make a rare trip out of his country to Russia - to discuss supplying weapons for use against Ukraine with President Vladmir Putin, according to the New York Times.


On Wednesday the White House warned it had intelligence to show that military cooperation between the two countries was "actively advancing".

Sunak says he's not to blame for school concrete crisis

The UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says it's wrong to blame him for the escalating crisis surrounding unsafe concrete material in English schools.

This comes after accusations that Sunak had ignored a report finding the concrete in some buildings presented a "critical risk", and cut the school repair budget when he was finance minister.

Ukraine says Russian drones detonated in Romania

The Ukrainian foreign ministry says Russian drones detonated on Romanian territory after an overnight attack targeting the port of Izmail along the Danube River.
But the Romanian government has categorically denied this report, and has condemned Russia's attacks on Ukraine's ports.

India says moon mission accomplished, rover put in sleep mode

India's space and research organisation - ISRO - says its moon rover has been put into sleep mode after completing its two-week assignment of conducting experiments on the south pole of the lunar surface.

This Indian rover is the first in the world to reach the moon's south pole.

US stocks mixed after jobs data

It was in like a lion - out like a lamb for US markets this week. All the major indices closed Friday fairly flat. But for the week - the S&P 500… and the Dow packed on their biggest weekly gains since July - the Nasdaq also had one of its best weeks since July…tacking on about 3 percent.  Toni Waterman has more.

President Biden pushes for more emergency relief funding in wake of natural disasters

US President Joe Biden is seeking an additional $4 billion for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Disaster Relief Fund in the wake of Hurricane Idalia.


The administration's extra request brings the total package, which needs to be passed by Congress, to $16 billion. 


Idalia, which made landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast on Wednesday, has moved on from the United States mainland -- but across the country's Southeast, tens of thousands of people still remain without power, with the storm submerging neighbourhoods and leaving a trail of destruction in her wake.

Russia's share of EU trade drops below 2%

Schools in England ordered to close buildings over structural concerns

Some 104 schools in England have been ordered to close buildings that contain a type of concrete that could be at risk of collapse.

Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete or RAAC [pronounced RACK] is a lightweight building material which deteriorates over time.

The warning comes just days before pupils return to the classroom for the new school year.

Teaching unions have expressed outrage that the guidance did not come earlier.

Supertyphoon Saola approaches Hong Kong -- actuality

CUE: Hong Kong is bracing for what is looking like the biggest and strongest typhoon for five years. Supertyphoon Saola* is bringing hurricane force winds. 

It's the fourth typhoon to hit the southern coast of China this summer. 

The three previous strong storms have killed dozens of people and made hundreds of thousands leave their homes. 

One typhoon reached so far inland that Beijing, the capital of China, was flooded last month.
