Schools in England ordered to close buildings over structural concerns

Some 104 schools in England have been ordered to close buildings that contain a type of concrete that could be at risk of collapse.

Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete or RAAC [pronounced RACK] is a lightweight building material which deteriorates over time.

The warning comes just days before pupils return to the classroom for the new school year.

Teaching unions have expressed outrage that the guidance did not come earlier.

Schools Minister Nick Gibb says new evidence emerged about the structural integrity of school buildings.
