South Korea leader seeks support for Japan's wastewater discharge

South Korea’s leader is vowing to win public support for Japan’s plan to discharge treated, radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean. 


Japan wants to dispose of more than a million tonnes of water used to cool the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant. 


Seoul had previously criticized the project.

US gives $690m to boost global democracies

US President Joe Biden has announced almost $700m in funding to help
boost democracies around the world.

He was speaking on day two of the Summit for Democracy.

However, the Biden administration has been criticized for making
little progress in upholding human rights and advancing democratic
freedoms since the last summit, 15 months ago.

White House preparing to strengthen bank regulations

The White House is preparing to call for federal banking regulators to impose new rules on midsize banks, according to reporting by The Washington Post.


It follows the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank earlier this month.

Reports: Italian PM's party proposes splitting retail and investment banks


Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's party has reportedly put forward legislation that would force banks to choose between retail and investment services.

US environmental agency opens investigation into Ohio train spill response

RUSSIA BEGINS STRATEGIC NUCLEAR MISSILE TRAINING

3000 troops and 300 pieces of equipment are taking part in nuclear missile exercises, according to the Russian Ministry of Defence.

Nigeria records 784 confirmed cases of Lassa fever, 142 deaths in three months

The Nigeria Centre for Disease and Control (NCDC) says it has registered 784 confirmed cases of Lassa fever with 142 deaths. 


The cases were recorded in about three months across 23 out of the 36 States in the country.


Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic fever caused by consuming foods contaminated by rats.
