Top US intelligence officials dismiss Assange claims, endorsed by Trump, on Russian hacking

Top US intelligence officials have said they have no confidence in comments made by Wikileaks founder Julian Assange that have been echoed, on Twitter, by US President-elect Donald Trump.


The Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and Under Secretary of Defense Marcel Lettre are testifying on Capitol Hill about Russia's involvement in the hacking of the Democratic Party's computer servers.


They dismissed claims by Julian Assange, repeated by Donald Trump, that Russia was not the source of Democratic Party documents published by Wikileaks in this exchange with Senator John McCain, a prominent Trump critic.

Russian hacking probe begins in US

The United States Congress is set to hear from senior members of the
intelligence community to shed more light on Russia's alleged cyber
attacks during the US elections.

President-elect Donald Trump is also expected to be briefed on the
subject Friday but dismisses the notion that Russia is to blame for
the hacking.

Downing Street praises new man in Europe

The British government has called its new representative to the European Union a "seasoned and tough negotiator" who will lead the Brexit negotiations.   

The appointment of senior diplomat Sir Tim Barrow comes after his predecessor Sir Ivan Rogers accused the government of "muddled thinking" and urged diplomats to speak truth to power.

Right to medication ruling could cost America's prisons billions

An important court ruling in America over the right to medical care for prisoners could cost state governments billions of dollars.

The British government has appointed a new Ambassador to the European Union following the surprise resignation of Sir Ivan Rogers.


Sir Tim Barrow will now head the British delegation at the EU and play a key role in negotiations about Britain's withdrawal from the group.


His predecessor resigned on Tuesday, accusing Prime Minister Teresa May's government of "muddled thinking".

UN, agencies aiding Syrians returning home to war-ravaged Aleppo
