Overturning sanctions doesn't make sense - White House

The Obama administration does not believe that overturning the sanctions imposed against Russia for hacking make much sense.

And yet, Donald Trump has said it's time to move on to bigger and better things, with the Russians eyeing both reciprocal actions and a hand of friendship.

PUTIN TO ALLOW US DIPLOMATS TO STAY

Russian President Vladimir Putin says he will not carry out tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats after the US told 35 Russian officials to leave the country.

Moscow denies allegations that it interfered with the US presidential election.

On Thursday the White House announced it would expel diplomats over the alleged hacking, and would also level sanctions against nine Russian entities and individuals.

Moscow correspondent Daria Bondarchuk says it had looked like President Putin might move to throw American diplomats out of Russia in retaliation.

Secret UK Cabinet Files Reveal Nuclear Breach

Cabinet files from the UK government dating back to the 80s and 90s have been released, revealing orders had been given to shoot intruders who breeched UK nuclear submarines.

The files, which were marked secret, discuss an incident where three anti-nuclear demonstrators managed to break into a nuclear submarine  at Faslane in the Clyde.

SYDNEY ARREST OVER NYE 'THREATS'

Australian anti-terror police have charged a man over threats made against New Year's Eve events in Sydney.

The 40 year-old was arrested at Sydney Airport off a flight from London after threats officials say were made on social media.

Officers also carried out raids on a storage facility and a house in Sydney and police say no threat remains to the community.

Charleston Church Shooter To Face New Competency Hearing

The shooter convicted earlier in December of killing nine people in a
Charleston, South Carolina church will undergo a second hearing to
determine if he is competent to stand trial. The motion was filed one

NYPD now allows Sikh officers to wear full turbans, longer beards

The New York Police Department now allows Sikh officers in uniform to wear full turbans and grow beards up to a length of half an inch — or slightly more than one centimeter.

35 Russian intelligence operatives given 72 hours to leave the U.S.

Obama administration in final push to transfer more Guantanamo inmates

The Obama administration is working against the clock to complete the transfer of close to 20 inmates from the controversial prison at Guantanamo Bay.

The White House needs to complete the process before President Elect Donald Trump is sworn in next month.
