Burundi rejects UN plan to send 288 police to monitor situation on the ground

White House insists Iran $400 million cash payment was not "ransom" for hostages

The White House is pushing back against Republican claims that a $400 million cash payment to Iran amounted to "ransom" in exchange for the freedom of American prisoners jailed by Tehran.


President Obama's spokesman says the money was a refund of cash paid by Iran to the US in 1979 in exchange for military equipment that was never subsequently supplied.

BoE expected to cut interest rates


The Bank of England is  expected to cut interest rates on Thursday for the first time in 7 years. Data showed that the UK economy experienced a downturn following a vote by the British public to leave the European Union.

Sport underway at Rio ahead of opening ceremony

Decisions over Russia's Rio 2016 team to go to the wire

More armed police to patrol London

London's Metropolitan Police have announced plans for more armed police to be put on the streets of the British capital.


It comes in the wake of attacks in Western Europe, though the Met Police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe says the move is not a result of any intelligence received to say an attack is expected shortly.

French armed police have been deployed on cross Channel ferries - as both France and the U.K. remain on high alert for a possible terror attack.

EXTRA ARMED POLICE DEPLOYED IN LONDON

Extra armed police are being deployed to the streets of London after recent terror attacks in Europe.

They'll be stationed at busy locations and well-known landmarks to reassure the public and also deter would-be attackers.

London's Metropolitan Police has been increasing the number of armed officers it has available up to nearly 3000.

The UK's terror threat level is at 'severe' which means an attack is thought to be 'highly likely'.

IOC approves Executive Board's stance on Russia competing in the Olympics

FAA Grants Virgin Galactic License To Fly

Richard Branson's space tourism venture Virgin Galactic made a giant
leap in the race to get tourists to space. It was awarded an operating
license from the Federal Aviation Administration for its SpaceShipTwo

they feel it is safe to do so.
