White House insists Iran $400 million cash payment was not "ransom" for hostages

The White House is pushing back against Republican claims that a $400 million cash payment to Iran amounted to "ransom" in exchange for the freedom of American prisoners jailed by Tehran.

President Obama's spokesman says the money was a refund of cash paid by Iran to the US in 1979 in exchange for military equipment that was never subsequently supplied.
