NYPD officer pleads not guilty to killing unarmed man

An New York Police officer has pleaded not guilty to the accidental
killing of an unarmed black man.

The decision to prosecute Peter Liang comes after months of
anti-police protests following the decisions not to charge two other
officers who killed black civilians in Missouri and New York.

Waze App's Police-Tracking Feature Under Fire

Smartphone thefts plummets thanks to kill switch

Smartphone thefts have fallen dramatically in major cities including London, New York and San Francisco thanks to the introduction of "kill switches".

The technology comprises a software lock that can be remotely activated when the phone goes missing.

Obama seeks Congressional authorization for IS fight

President Obama is asking the US Congress to authorize a 3-year military campaign against Islamic State and he's leaving the door open to the possible deployment of ground troops in Iraq and Syria.


If approved, it will be the first time Congress has authorized a President to use force since George W. Bush invaded Iraq.

US embassy in Yemen shut

The White House has confirmed that the U.S. embassy in Sana'a Yemen is shut, but counter-terrorism operations will continue.

Officially, the Yemeni government has been shut down since January 22 and multiple governments have evacuated their citizens and diplomats.

With reports of the Houthi militants trying to remove the weapons from the U.S. Marine guard, representatives of the Houthi political bureau says they want to work with the Americans.

White wants to preserve options to combat Islamic State

The Obama adminsitration wants to preserve its options in the fight against the Islamic State militants.

The White House has sent the draft text of an AUMF - authorization to use military force - to address the American military's role in Iraq and Syria.

With political concerns about soldiers returning to a combat role, White House spokesman Josh Earnest says the text is a starting point and its about flexibility.

Man suspected of killing 3 muslim students appears in court in North Carolina

A 46 year old man has appeared in court charged with killing three students near the University of North Carolina campus.

US oil supplies hit record high

Oil supplies in the US have hit a record 80-year-high, according to a
new government report.

This latest data shows the surplus of oil, which has suppressed prices
in recent months, is still at unprecedented levels.

DNA evidence of second person involved in death of Argentinian prosecutor

Forensic experts in Argentina said they have found DNA from a second unidentified person in the apartment where prosecutor Alberto Nisman was found dead. 

Investigators hope that the DNA sample can shed light on the case, which some believe has implicated the country's intelligence agency, as well as president Cristina Fernandez herself.

'300 MIGRANTS DEAD' AFTER BOATS SINK IN MED

300 migrants are thought to have died in the Mediterranean after boats carrying them from North Africa sank.

The UN's refugee agency believes the migrants departed from Libya on Saturday, and are originally from West Africa.

The UNHCR says almost 3500 people died attempting to cross the Mediterranean sea in 2014.

But a year-long operation by Italy aimed at rescuing migrants from the sea ended in November.

The European Union border agency Frontex now runs an operation but with far fewer ships and over a smaller area.

Police probe murders of 3 Muslim students in North Carolina

The leader of a group that sent jihadists to fight in Syria has been jailed for 12 years by a Belgian court.

A total of 45 members of the group called Sharia4Belgium were also convicted of terror offences.

Prosecutors had told the court Sharia4Belgium sent recruits to join militants including the Islamic State.

Only seven of the group were at the court in Antwerp - with the rest thought to still be in Syria or Iraq.
