US-Cuba talks end positively


After two days of historic talks between Washington and Havana, both sides have agreed to continuing the conversation and have outlined a series of issues they will discuss.

The countries said that it could take weeks before the next round of talks was scheduled - a sign of the long road ahead.

Mother of Japanese ISIS hostage pleads for his life


ISIS says a "countdown has begun" for the group to kill two Japanese hostages. 

The deadline passed on Friday for Tokyo to pay a ransom of 200-million dollars to prevent ISIS from beheading the hostages.  

An online post by known Islamic militants shows a countdown along with gruesome images of the group's past victims.  

Japan has not released any details on efforts to free the hostages.

US Journalist jailed for stolen data links

An American journalist has been jailed for five years after he posted
links online to stolen information.

Barrett Brown, who had links to the hacking group Anonymous, says he
acted to expose government wrongdoing.

Fighting flares and civilians casualties mount in eastern Ukraine

Government troops in eastern Ukraine have withdrawn from Donetsk airport's main terminal after months of fighting.

Obama hails late Saudi King Abdullah

The White House has hailed the late King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud of Saudi Arabia as a leader dedicated to the education of his people and to greater engagement with the world.

President Obama said in a statement that the King was a warm and genuine friend whose perspective he valued. Vice President Joe Biden has announced he will lead a US delegation in the coming days to pay respects and offer condolences to King Abullah's family and nation.

Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has died in hospital and is to be buried on Friday afternoon- that's according to the country's state media.

The king- who was in his nineties- had been in hospital for some weeks suffering from a lung infection.

U.S. relations with Saudi Arabia had been strained recently over the repression of political dissidents.

Controversy swirls around Super Bowl team

Obama will not meet Netanyahu

US President Barack Obama will not meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he speaks to Congress in March.

The White House cited a "long-standing practice" of not meeting heads of state close to elections, which Israel will hold in mid-March.

Mr Netanyahu was invited by House Speaker John Boehner in what is seen as a rebuke to Mr Obama's Iran policy.

The US president has said he will veto attempts to add new sanctions on Iran, a position supported by the Israeli Prime Minister.
