US Justice Dept. to investigate Garner death

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has announced an investigation into possible civil rights violations following the death of Eric Garner in New York. 

Mr. Garner died while being arrested for illegally selling cigarettes when New York City police officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in a chokehold.

A grand juty failed to indict the officer on wrongful death charges.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said the federal investigation had to wait until the local process was complete.

Calls for calm after indictment failure in New York

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is calling for calm after a grand jury failed to indict a New York City police officer in the death of an arrestee.

In July, Eric Garner, an overweight man with asthma, died when Officer Daniel Pantaleo put him in a chokehold while attempting to arrest him for illegally selling cigarettes on Staten Island.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said that many in the city have strong feelings about the failure to indict the officer on wrongful death charges.

Obama pledges action as protestors gather over New York grand jury decision

America is on edge again after a grand jury in New York decided not to charge a white police officer in connection with the choking death of an unarmed black man earlier this year.


Eric Garner could be heard on tape telling officers that he couldn't breathe, as they wrestled him to the ground during an arrest for selling black-market cigarettes.


The decision has been greeted with consternation in Washington, from where Simon Marks reports.

Obama on Garner Decision: We Will Not Let Up

President Barack Obama has spoken out about the decision of a grand jury in New York not to bring charges in the case of Eric Garner, an African American man who died after being placed in a chokehold by a white police officer.

The decision was reached on Wednesday after months of testimony, including from the officer who used the chokehold, Daniel Pantaleo.

President Obama, speaking at the White House Tribal Nations Conference, said he was committed to building trust between law enforcement and American communities, adding that he's been speaking to the Attorney General about the case:

Disdain After NY Police Avoid Charges After Choking Death

A grand jury in New York has voted not to charge the police officers involved in choking to death an unarmed black man in Staten Island.

Eric Garner died after a white police officer brought him to the ground in a chokehold.

Many lawmakers are expressing disbelief at the decision, especially because the strangulation was recorded on a video which has been widely distributed.

The decision comes only days after a grand jury decided not to charge an officer with shooting to death an unarmed teenager in Ferguson, Missouri.

New York Representative Hakeem Jeffries is among several colleagues calling for the Justice Department to launch an investigation.

Police officer critically injured in Denver protest over Ferguson

Four police officers were hit by a car and one critically injured at a Ferguson protest in Denver.

This comes as similar demonstrations continue across the U.S. over the grand jury's decision to not indict the white police officer who killed unarmed black teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri in August.

Kerry: Iranian Action Against Islamic State Would Be 'Positive'

The US Secretary of State has said that any airstrikes taken against the Islamic State organisation by Iran would be 'positive'.

Execution of mentally ill Texas murderer stopped by US Court of Appeals

The execution of a mentally-ill inmate on death row in Texas has been halted just hours before it was due to get underway.

American woman stabbed to death in Abu Dhabi

Authorities in United Arab Emirates have confirmed, an American woman was stabbed to death in a mysterious attack at a shopping mall in Abu Dhabi.

The attack comes after the embassy had issued a warning to Americans about their personal safety in Abu Dhabi.

Bill Cosby facing lawsuit over underage sex abuse allegations

Bill Cosby is facing a lawsuit from a woman who claims the comedian sexually assaulted her when she was 15-years-old.  

The plaintiff is accusing Cosby of abusing her in 1974.  

The news comes a day after Cosby resigned from the board of trustees at his alma mater, Temple University.  

Multiple women have come forward recently to accuse him of sexual assault, although Cosby has never been charged with a crime.

Dewani awaits trial decision

The British man accused of arranging the murder of his wife in South Africa could have his case thrown out of the Cape Town Court.


The family of his bride say if the trial does not go ahead, it would be a nightmare. They've waited four years for Shrien Dewani to be extradited to South Africa and for the case against him to be heard.

THOUSANDS MOURN PHILLIP HUGHES AT FUNERAL

Thousands of people have turned out to pay tribute to Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes in New South Wales.

The 25 year-old died last week after being hit by a ball during a match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The funeral was attended by Australia's Prime Minister as well as cricketers past and present from around the world.

Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke broke down in tears as he spoke at the service.
