Extended lockdown hits German economy as vaccine rollout speeds up

Germany's economy has been hit hard by prolonged lockdowns, with new analysis showing the economy shrank in the first quarter of this year. 

A fall was expected, but the size of the drop in GDP went further than analysts predicted.

DOZENS DIE AT ISRAEL RELIGIOUS GATHERING

Authorities in Israel say at least 44 people have been killed and dozens more injured, in a stampede at a religious gathering.

The crush happened at Mount Meron in the north-east of the country, where the Lag BaOmer celebrations were taking place.

Dozens more people are injured.

Australia – Sydney men linked to European drug syndicate appear in court after multi million dollar drug bust

A pair of Sydney men, allegedly linked to a 2019 attempt to smuggle MDMA into Australia from the Netherlands, have appeared in court in Brisbane.


The arrests stemmed from a major joint international investigation that prevented an estimated 15 million ecstacy pills arriving in Australia.

Hong Kong records first untraceable local COVID-19 mutation

Hong Kong's health authorities are warning of a new COVID-19 transmission risk, after recording the city's first untraceable local case of a mutated virus strain. Hundreds of people living in the residential building where the case was discovered have been sent to government quarantine centres.

Wall Street gains on strong GDP, lower jobless claims, tech earnings

Wall Street bounced back Thursday, on the back of strong first-quarter GDP, declining jobless claims, and blockbuster earnings from Facebook and Apple, 


The three benchmark indices clocked gains as the technology sector continued its winning streak, with the S&P hitting a new record high.
