Democrat officially declared winner in Alabama Senate race

The surprise victor of the US Senate race in Alabama has officially been declared the winner.

Election officials say Democrat Doug beat Republican Roy Moore in a race seen as a key indication of voter approval of President Trump.

Moore - who had been dogged with allegations of sexual harassment of teenage girls - is still refusing to concede, claiming the election was rife with voter fraud.

UN: Calls on Russia and China to condemn Myanmar human rights abuse of Rohingya

UN official blames Saudi-led strikes for civilian deaths in Yemen

The UN's top official in Yemen says 68 civilians have been killed in fighting in the country in just one day.

Jamie McGoldrick, the UN's humanitarian coordinator, blames two Saudi-led air raids for the deaths.

The United Nations reports more than a hundred civilians have been killed in the violence in Yemen over the last ten days.

UNICEF spokeswoman in Sana'a, Meritxell Relaño, says a political solution must be found.

AIRLINES WORK TO RESTORE SCHEDULES AFTER UK WEATHER CHAOS

Thousands of passengers stranded by snowy conditions in the UK are hoping to resume journeys as airlines work to restore flight schedules.

Dozens of flights were cancelled or delayed on Wednesday, many of them at London's Stansted airport.

Israel to name train station near Western Wall after Trump

The Israeli government says it's planning to name a train station after U.S. President Donald Trump, in honor of his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The country's transportation minister announced the move [Wednesday] saying the train station will be next to the Western Wall, which is considered one of the holiest sites in the Jewish faith.

Al-Qaeda warns of attacks on Indian cities

In a recently released video, terror group Al-Qaeda has warned of attacks on major Indian cities in a bid to wrest freedom for the contested Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Both India and Pakistan stake claim to Jammu and Kashmir. However the Indian government blames Pakistan and terror groups like Al-Qaeda for fomenting regular unrest in the region.

Obama warns about the misuse of social media

Former US President Barack Obama has warned of the dangers of social media promoting extremist views and isolationism in a rare interview since he left office. 


Barack Obama made the comments in an interview with Britain's Prince Harry for BBC Radio.    The former leader said he was concerned by the use of social media to reinforce people's views and said it could be used to spread misinformation. 


Mr Obama did not mentioned his successor, President Donald Trump by name.  President Trump is a prolific tweeter while at the same time accusing mainstream media outlets of promoting fake news. 


Speaking to Prince Harry, the former President said the misuse of social media was a pressing issue.

Gunman opens fire in Moscow factory killing one person

UK faces travel chaos and power cuts amid severe weather


Rain, snow and ice have hit large parts of the UK causing travel chaos and power outages in thousands of homes. 


Around twenty thousand homes are without power in what power companies are describing as snow-related cuts.    


Meanwhile police are warning drivers to expect hazardous conditions on roads with warnings of ice and snow.   Some drivers have been trapped for hours on roads which have become impassable.

Gloomy wage forecast for UK workers

A UK think tank is warning British workers should not expect a pay rise in 2018. 


The Resolution Foundation, which campaigns for fair pay,  says it is expecting zero growth in real wages over the coming year as a whole.  

The pay squeeze of 2017 which saw inflation overtake wage rises is expected to level off however it warned real wage growth would be flat until December 2018 at the earliest. 


Stephen Clarke says UK household earnings will remain below pre-2008 financial crash levels, a situation which is not expected to improve for some time.
