Journalist outcry after White House denounces media as dishonest

There have been fiery scenes between journalists and White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders over whether the media is falsifying news to get ratings.

After an incident in which CNN had to retract an incorrect story about alleged links between a Russian investment fund and Trump officials, Ms Sanders said the whole Russia-Trump story was a hoax. She said she was concerned the media was using unnamed sources and sometimes no sources to produce stories just to get ratings.

A local reporter, Brian Karem, took issue with Ms Sanders, saying journalists were only trying to do their job.

White House defends threat against Syria over possible use of chemical weapons

Russia has denounced the United States for threatening action against Syria if chemical weapons are used again in the country's long-running civil war.

The Kremlin says it has no evidence that its ally Syria, has chemical weapons, and says the US threat is a violation of the legitimacy of President Assad's government.

In Washington, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the warning to Assad was consistent with US policy and did not detract from the key aim of defeating the so-called Islamic State group.

Republicans can't get the numbers to pass controversial healthcare bill

Attempts by the American Republican Party to force through a controversial new healthcare bill have run into trouble.

The government's own estimates predict the bill would force 22 million people off health insurance, and there would be higher costs for the old and the poor.

Five senators say they won't support the bill for a variety of reasons so a vote has been delayed until after the July 4th national holiday.

President Trump personally lobbied Senators to support the bill, but Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell says the delay is not a sign of failure.

Pew Research Center poll: US President and policies are "broadly unpopular around the world"

An international survey says US President Donald Trump and his policies are "broadly unpopular around the world."

Theresa May calls for national investigation into use of cladding

British Prime Minister Theresa May says a major national investigation is needed into the use of cladding in high-rise buildings.  It comes as 95   buildings have failed safety tests following the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy in west London in which at least 79 people died earlier this month.

The buildings are in 32  local authority areas across England.    Downing Street said such an investigation could come in a second phase of a public inquiry

Britain's defense secretary Michael Fallon said the government is committed to making sure every contributing factor of the tragedy is fully investigated.
