Russia has denounced the United States for threatening action against Syria if chemical weapons are used again in the country's long-running civil war.
The Kremlin says it has no evidence that its ally Syria, has chemical weapons, and says the US threat is a violation of the legitimacy of President Assad's government.
In Washington, White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the warning to Assad was consistent with US policy and did not detract from the key aim of defeating the so-called Islamic State group.
