Antonio Guterres Starts As UN Secretary General (WRAP)

Former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres has started his first day as UN Secretary General by laying a wreath in honour of staff who died in the line of duty.

The 67 year old, who also used to head up the UN's refugee agency, is taking over from Ban Ki Moon who spent a decade in the job.

Trump hits fellow Republicans over Congressional ethics move

US President Elect Donald Trump has criticized his fellow Republicans in Congress, accusing them of weakening an independent office that oversees ethical violations on Capitol Hill.

End of year data released by the Chicago Police Department shows 2016 was one of the most violent years in history for that city. 

The year ended with 762 homicides in Chicago.

US claims ISIS on defensive despite Baghdad car bombing


A car bomb has killed dozens of people in Baghdad as US-backed Iraqi forces continue their fight against the self-declared Islamic state group.

ISIS is being blamed for the bombing, the latest in a series of explosions and attacks in several Iraqi cities in the past few days.

New United Nations chief calls for peace in 2017

The new United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called
for peace in 2017 urging the international community to leave war and
bloodshed in the past.

The former Prime Minister of Portugal was officially sworn into the

work until Sunday.

America's incoming leader Donald Trump is set to be briefed in the coming days on Russia's alleged interference in the recent US election.
