Obama's wish to end war in Afghanistan suffers blow with announcement of extension of US military presence

US President Barack Obama's wish to end the Afghanistan war has suffered a blow today with the announcement that 5500 US troops will stay in the country beyond 2016.
The president had planned to reduce the number to just a 1000 by the time he leaves office in 2017 but the US military says more troops will be needed to help Afghan forces counter a growing Taliban threat.

Burberry hit by slump in Asia

Luxury British retailer Burberry has reported a drop in revenue from Asia, but says its earnings would be in line with average forecasts.


The brand has been hit by weak consumer spending in the world's second largest economy, China.

Volkswagen ordered to recall 2.4 million cars in Germany

German's automotive watchdog has ordered Volkswagen to recall 2.4
million vehicles that were part of a diesel emissions scandal.

According to media reports, German authorities rejected an earlier
voluntary recall plan the carmaker had submitted.

US, Russia close to agreeing on air safety deal for Syria

US and Russia are getting closer to agreeing on a deal to guarantee air safety for American and Russian jets carrying out military missions in Syria. The announcement came after a third round of talks between the military officials of both countries following a "near miss" in the sky over Syria. NETFLIX SUBSCRIBER GROWTH DISAPPOINTS

Netflix added fewer new subscribers than expected during July and September, disappointing investors.

The online tv company signed up 3.62 million new customers in the period, to take its total base to just under 70 million.

Revenue was also up to $1.74 billion, but Netflix admits it is seeing a slowdown in subscriber growth.

UK NURSE REMAINS 'CRITICALLY ILL' WITH EBOLA

A British nurse remains critically ill in hospital in London after Ebola was discovered to be still present in her body.

Sydney Police lay charges over terror attack in Parramatta

Sydney Police have advised that a 22-year-old man will be charged with supplying the gun in the terror-related murder of Australian police employee Curtis Cheng earlier this month.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione (SKIPPY-OH-NEE) told a press conference an 18-year-old Wentworthville man, who's spent more than a week in custody in connection to Mr Cheng's murder in Parramatta, will be charged with terrorism-related offences.

US State Dep: Dimona stabbing is "an act of terrorism", Kerry due to visit Middle East

The United States has confirmed that it qualifies the recent stabbing of four Palestinian men in the Israeli city of Dimona as an "act of terrorism".

State Department Spokesman John Kirby said the conclusion was reached after looking into the attack more deeply.

US Troops Sent To Cameroon

US urges 'calm and restraint' as Israel violence continues

The United States is urging calm and restraint as deadly attacks in Israel continue.

During a Tuesday briefing, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the U.S. is deeply concerned about the escalation of violence and is in contact with both Israeli and Palestinian leaders. 

The US Secretary of State John Kerry is also expected to travel to the region in a bid to end the unrest.

Troops deployed as Israel ramps up security amid ongoing violence


Israel has deployed soldiers and set-up checkpoints as part of security measures in the face of more violence in the country.

An escalation in attacks in recent weeks has left at least eight Israelis and more than two-dozen Palestinians dead.
