The war in Afghanistan is likely to become a campaign issue in the 2016 US presidential election after the US announced it would be extending its military presence in the country.
US President Barack Obama had planned to withdraw all but 1000 troops but now he's expected to keep 5,500 troops in the country, when he leaves office in 2017, prolonging the American role in a war that has now stretched fourteen years.
