Obama's wish to end war in Afghanistan suffers blow with announcement of extension of US military presence

US President Barack Obama's wish to end the Afghanistan war has suffered a blow today with the announcement that 5500 US troops will stay in the country beyond 2016.
The president had planned to reduce the number to just a 1000 by the time he leaves office in 2017 but the US military says more troops will be needed to help Afghan forces counter a growing Taliban threat.
Washington correspondent Simon Marks says this is not a decision President Obama would have taken lightly
