UN announces proposal for unity government in Libya

The United Nations has proposed a national unity government in Libya that marks a major step towards ending the conflict, following months of negotiations that led nowhere. 


The UN envoy for Libya Bernardino Leon announced the proposed government and named the prime minister as Fayez Sarraj.

Four Russian missiles aimed at Syria have hit Iran, US officials say

Russian missiles aimed at Syria have hit Iran, senior United States officials told reporters on Thursday.

Speaking on condition of anonymity the officials said the exact location and extent of damage has yet to be confirmed.

Train hero stabbed

Spencer Stone, one of three American men who stopped a terror attack aboard a French train last August, has been stabbed.

The incident, which took place California, is not believed to have been a hate crime.

Top US Commander in Afghanistan reiterates hospital bombing was US mistake

The US top commander in Afghanistan has once again expressed regret about the US airstrike  on a hospital in the country which killed 22 people.
Testifying in a US House Armed Services Committee hearing (Thursday), General John Campbell again labelled the bombing a mistake and said full and transparent investigations are underway.

NATO BOOSTS RESPONSE FORCES AMID SYRIA CRISIS

NATO defense ministers meeting amid concern over Russian military action in Syria have decided to increase response forces to speed up potential troop deployments.

And the military alliance has renewed a pledge to defend its allies over what it calls an 'escalation' of Russian military activity in Syria.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg has called on Moscow to stop backing Syria's President Bashar al Assad militarily, although Russia insists it is targeting the Islamic State in the country.

Speaking in Brussels, the NATO secretary general said the alliance's members are agreed in terms of criticism of Moscow.

Britain expected to announce long-term deployment to Baltic States

Britain's defence secretary, Michael Fallon, is expected to announce in Brussels that the country will deploy troops to Baltic states for a long-term period.

HUNDREDS REFERRED FOR 'DERADICALISATION' IN UK

Nearly 800 people in the UK were referred for possible deradicalisation intervention between June and August, according to the latest figures.

The British government's 'Channel' scheme had eight people a day referred to it during that period.

It comes as UK officials attempt to stem the flow of people traveling to join the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

Over a third of those referred to Channel were under 18.

Dr Erin Saltman from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue says it's a worrying but unsurprising trend.

EU ministers meet with Turkish, Jordanian, Lebanese and Western Balkan counterparts on refugee crisis

EU interior ministers are meeting in Luxembourg along with their counterparts from Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and the Balkan countries to discuss the ongoing refugee crisis.

Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton now opposes the Trans Pacific Partnership, a trade deal she supported as U.S. Secretary of State.

Political rivals were quick to denounce her change in opinion, noting the reversal comes just days before the first Democratic candidates debate.
