UK hospital doctors may be forced to work weekends to cut deaths

Britain's Health Secretary is threatening to force senior hospital doctors to work at weekends, in a bid to cut patient deaths over these days.

Jeremy Hunt has said he is prepared to impose seven-day working on hospital consultants who can currently opt out of weekend work, although they are expected to be on call.

Mr Hunt said the "Monday to Friday" culture in hospitals meant around six thousand people die each year because of this.

The British Medical Association says the union supports more seven day working but has serious concerns about workload.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt says its imperative the two sides come to an agreement.

Greek vote to accept the bailout deal spurs action

Greek PM Alexis Tsipras has won a crucial late night parliamentary vote backing the 86 billion euro bailout package agreed with international creditors.  Although he lost the support of more than 30 MPs from his Syriza party, his government is expected to survive.

A spokesman for Mr Tsipras says the Greek leader is now focused on completing the deal.

Eurozone finance ministers will discuss the vote in a conference call while also considering short-term emergency funding until the new bailout is finalized.

The European Commission has proposed giving Greece a €7bn "bridging" loan from an EU-wide fund to help the country pay debt interest due in several days.

Finance expert Henk Potts told London's LBC radio the vote will spur activity on a number of fronts.

UK FOREIGN MINISTER TO VISIT ISRAEL FOR IRAN TALKS

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond is to visit Israel later (on Wednesday) - the first senior figure to do so from world powers who agreed a nuclear deal with Iran on Monday.

Israel is one of the strongest opponents to the Iran deal, which will see sanctions eased in exchange for limits on Tehran's nuclear programme.

Before leaving for Israel, Mr Hammond told the UK's House of Commons that he believes Benjamin Netanyahu's government would rather there be a permanent 'stand-off' on Iran than a nuclear agreement.

But the UK Foreign Secretary insists Iran and the rest of the world will soon see the benefits of a deal.

EU to vote on use of EU-wide fund for Greece bridge-financing

European officials will vote on the controversial use of an EU-wide fund to provide Greece 7 billion euros in emergency funding it desperately needs.

There is opposition from the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic  because the funding is provided by taxpayers within the EU but outside of the single currency euro.

Greece needs the funding to repay its debts due the the European Central Bank on July 20th, or it almost certainly will be forced out of the euro.

The U.K. says it will approve the use of the fund, known as the EFSM, if leaders can guarantee protection from economic loss, but it would prefer to use funding from the European Stability Mechanism, which is set up for eurozone countries' use.

As an EU-wide fund, the use of the ESFM will be put to a vote for all 28 member states, but only 65 per cent approval is needed for it to pass.

European Commissioner of the Euro Valdis Dombrovskis [VAL-DIS DOM-BROV-SKis] says he recognizes the difficulties in choosing to use the EFSM.
