U.S. President Barack Obama has strongly defended a historic nuclear deal with Iran, saying the alternative was to clear the way for Iran to become a nuclear power.

At a news conference in Washington, the president called on Congress- where there is stiff opposition to dismantling sanctions against Iran- to support the deal.

His comments come a day after the U.S. and five other world powers struck the agreement with Tehran.

UK FOREIGN MINISTER TO VISIT ISRAEL FOR IRAN TALKS

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond is to visit Israel later (on Wednesday) - the first senior figure to do so from world powers who agreed a nuclear deal with Iran on Monday.

Israel is one of the strongest opponents to the Iran deal, which will see sanctions eased in exchange for limits on Tehran's nuclear programme.

Before leaving for Israel, Mr Hammond told the UK's House of Commons that he believes Benjamin Netanyahu's government would rather there be a permanent 'stand-off' on Iran than a nuclear agreement.

But the UK Foreign Secretary insists Iran and the rest of the world will soon see the benefits of a deal.

EU to vote on use of EU-wide fund for Greece bridge-financing

European officials will vote on the controversial use of an EU-wide fund to provide Greece 7 billion euros in emergency funding it desperately needs.

There is opposition from the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic  because the funding is provided by taxpayers within the EU but outside of the single currency euro.

Greece needs the funding to repay its debts due the the European Central Bank on July 20th, or it almost certainly will be forced out of the euro.

The U.K. says it will approve the use of the fund, known as the EFSM, if leaders can guarantee protection from economic loss, but it would prefer to use funding from the European Stability Mechanism, which is set up for eurozone countries' use.

As an EU-wide fund, the use of the ESFM will be put to a vote for all 28 member states, but only 65 per cent approval is needed for it to pass.

European Commissioner of the Euro Valdis Dombrovskis [VAL-DIS DOM-BROV-SKis] says he recognizes the difficulties in choosing to use the EFSM.
