Obama calls for sweeping reforms to US criminal justice system

President Barack Obama has called for sweeping reforms to the US criminal justice system including curbing the use of solitary confinement.

The president outlined his plan centering on nonviolent crimes while speaking at The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People convention in Philadelphia.

Obama said mandatory minimum sentences should be reduced or thrown out entirely as they've led to mass incarceration which is unmatched around the world.
