US Senate steps toward granting fast-track trade promotion authority

Approval to grant U.S. President Barack Obama 'fast-track" trade promotion authority has taken a step forward following a 62-38 vote in the U.S. Senate to end debate on the legislation.

However, the major trade bills - T-TIP, TPP and AGOA - for Europe, Asia and Africa respectively, could still be derailed by legislation on other key, related matters, including currency practices and investor protectors.

Oil spill mars California coast line

Inspectors are set to reveal their thinking on why a pipeline carrying crude oil down the California coast broke.

It's thought that more than 100,000 gallons of crude oil have spilled in and around the beaches of Santa Barbara, just north of Los Angeles.

The owner of the pipeline operator, Plains All-American, Greg Armstrong apologized for the enviromental disaster.

British Taxi Driver Guilty of Murdering US Soldier

A British court has found a taxi driver guilty of  the murder of a US soldier in Iraq,  eight years ago.

Eight men appear in London Court over Hatton Garden Heist

Eight men have appeared in a London court in connection with the theft in the capital's Hatton Garden jewellery district last month.


It comes after a series of police raids took place earlier this week, it's understood 10 men have been arrested in total.

UK newspaper group awards nearly $2m in hacking damages

The UK newspaper organisation Mirror Group has been ordered to pay nearly 2 million dollars in damages to eight people whose phones were hacked by journalists behind celebrity stories...

Among those receiving payouts are ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne and actress Sadie Frost.

Protests At McDonald's HQ As Shareholders Meet

Thousands of protestors calling for a higher minimum wage are stepping up the pressure on McDonald's, gathering outside its headquarters near Chicago as shareholders arrive for their annual meeting.

China orders US military plane out of disputed area

China has issued an indirect warning to the United States, to respect its disputed claims to sovereignty in the South China Sea.

It follows a flight by a US military surveillance aircraft over highly controversial, man-made islands being created by the Chinese in waters claimed by other Asian nations.

ISLAMIC STATE IN CONTROL OF PALMYRA

The Islamic State is in control of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra and its Unesco World Heritage site ruins, according to activists.

Observers are now monitoring for signs that IS is destroying artefacts as it has done elsewhere in parts of Syria and Iraq.

Syrian state media claims most of the inhabitants of Tadmur, which is the modern settlement at Palmyra, have been evacuated.

CAMERON PLANS ILLEGAL WORKER CRACKDOWN

British Prime Minister David Cameron is revealing plans to seize wages from illegal workers as part of a crackdown on migration.

Next Thursday's Queen's Speech will include legislation to treat the pay of illegal workers as the proceeds of crime.

The government says it is part of a 'tougher but fairer' approach to immigration, as it struggles to bring down net migration numbers.

Critics say the plans are unworkable and won't tackle rising migration anyway since the government can't control the numbers of people arriving from within the European Union.

Palmyra falls to IS amid fears over ancient ruins

Islamic State has seized control of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, and there are now grave concerns for the future of 2,000 year-old ruins there.


IS fighters have been destroying antiquities in other parts of Syria and Iraq.

US President Barack Obama says climate change will impact every country on the planet and is a serious threat to U.S. national security.

Speaking at the US Coast Guard Academy in the state of Connecticut, the President said the world must reduce its carbon emissions immediately.

PayPal Accused of Deception, Agrees to Pay $25 Million in Fines and Compensation

The online payment service PayPal has agreed to pay 25 million US dollars in fines and compensation, after being accused of deceiving its customers.
