Former State Dept. Official 'Concerned' About Alan Gross Release

A former State Department official has said he is concerned about the release of American contractor Alan Gross, who is now back in the US after being held in prison in Cuba after five years. 

The release of Mr. Gross comes as the Obama administration seeks to normalise relations with Cuba for the first time since the revolution there in 1961.

Seismic breakthrough announced in US-Cuba relations

The US and Cuba are to discuss a restoration of diplomatic relations after 18 months of secret negotiations between the two countries.


The agreement discussed in detail during a phone call between President Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro includes a prisoner swap, and sets the stage for an end to decades of hostility between the two countries.

US opens talks with Cuba


The United States is opening talks with Cuba to restore full diplomatic relations.  Officials said Wednesday that they hope to open an embassy in Havana for the first time in more than 50 years. 

The decision comes following the release of American contractor Alan Gross, who was held prisoner in Cuba for five years. 

Gross had been serving a 15-year sentence in a Cuban prison for trying to bring Internet services to the country.  As part of his release, the U.S. is releasing three Cuban spies arrested in Miami in 2001.  

Officials denied they were being traded for Gross, saying they were instead being swapped for another person imprisoned in Cuba believed to be involved with U.S. intelligence agencies.

UK Girl, 15, stopped from flying to Syria

It's emerged a 15-year-old British girl was taken off a plane by police just moments before take off at Heathrow Airport - amid concerns she was going to join the conflict in Syria...

Details have been released about a police operation earlier this month, which saw the aircraft stopped while it was taxiing down a runway.

Pakistan lift moratorium on death penalty after Taliban attack kills 130 school children

Pakistan's prime minister is ending the country's moratorium on the death penalty after Taliban gunmen killed more than 130 children at a school.  

Tuesday's attack killed 132 students and nine teachers.  The nation is in mourning Wednesday as parents prepare to bury their children.  

People throughout the country staged overnight vigils and lit candles in memory of the children and adults killed in the attack in the northwestern city of Peshawar

New York theatre cancels film premiere amid threats

The New York premiere of the controversial movie that depicts an
assassination attempt on the North Korean leader has been cancelled
after hackers threatened a "9/11" style attack.

Sony Pictures CEO 'Consulted US State Dept' On N. Korea Film

Leaked emails show that the head of Sony Pictures consulted a senior official in the US government in June, over the release of an upcoming film featuring a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The Reuters news agency reports that it's seen an internal email between Sony Pictures CEO Michael Lynton and US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel, in which the studio says it's concerned about American and North Korean relations.

UK inquiry finds claims of torture by British army in Iraq 'lies'


A public inquiry in the UK lasting five years has determined that accusations of torture and killings made by Iraqi detainees against the British military were 'deliberate lies.'


Claims were made that as many as 20 Iraqis were murdered and mutilated.

US refuses to hand over marine charged with murder of transgender Filipino

The United States embassy in Manila has turned down a request from Philippine authorities to hand over a Marine accused of the killing of a transgender Filipino.
It could spark anti-American protest in the former U.S. colony.
Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton is charged with the murder of Jennifer Laude, who was found dead in a hotel in Olongapo City in October.

First female bishop named

The Church of England has announced its first female bishop, which comes a month after a historic change in legislation.


Reverend Libby Lane was ordained as a deacon in 1993 and a priest in 1994,  she will become the Bishop of Stockport.

CHURCH OF ENGLAND ANNOUNCES FIRST FEMALE BISHOP

The Church of England has announced the first female bishop in its history.

The Reverend Libby Lane becomes Bishop of Stockport after a change to the Church's legislation last month.

This followed a vote by the general synod to back plans for female bishops in July.

The appointment comes twenty years after women first became priests in the Church of England.

And Libby Lane says she is well aware of the significance of her appointment.

Apple stops online sales in Russia because of rouble volatility

Technology giant Apple says it has stopped selling its products online in Russia because the country's rouble currency is too unstable to set prices.


The rouble has lost more than 20% in value on Monday and Tuesday despite a decision by the central bank to hike interest rates.

REVIEW LAUNCHED INTO SYDNEY HOSTAGE TAKER CHECKS

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has launched a review into security checks carried out on the Sydney cafe hostage taker.

Man Haron Monis was not on any watch list despite a criminal record, history of violence and extremist views.

Monis was killed as police raided a cafe in which he'd taken hostages on Tuesday.

Two hostages also died.

According to Iran - where Monis was originally from - Australia refused to extradite him 14 years ago.

Launching an inquiry into any background checks carried out, Prime Minister Abbott vowed to do everything in his power to keep Australians safe.

Pennsylvania shooting-spree 'suspect' found dead

A body has been found in woods near to the home of a Marine veteran suspected of killing his ex-wife and five of her relatives in suburban Philadelphia.

The District Attorney says the body was found on Tuesday afternoon by police looking for 35-year-old Bradley William Stone.
