UKIP WINS FIRST ELECTED MP

The UK Independence Party has its first elected MP at Westminster after a by-election win in Britain.

UKIP's Douglas Carswell romped home in Clacton, after defecting from the Conservative Party.

UKIP also ran the Labour Party close in another by-election in Heywood and Middleton and now set their sights on next May's general election.

The UK Independence Party's anti-EU, anti-immigration, anti-establishment message appears to be winning voters from the two traditional main parties - the Conservatives and Labour.

And Douglas Carswell insists it heralds the beginning of a major shift.

A state senator and black leaders in the U.S. state of Missouri are calling for a federal investigation after a white police officer fatally shot a black teen.

This comes as tension was already high in St. Louis. The August killing of African-American teen Michael Brown sparked weeks of unrest in the nearby suburb, Ferguson. And many residents are preparing for a weekend of protests over alleged police violence and racial profiling.

UKIP POISED FOR FIRST MP

Polls have close in two by-elections in the UK, one of which could see the UK Independence Party with its first ever MP at Westminster.

In Clacton in the east of England, UKIP hopes it has won a Westminster seat via Douglas Carswell, who's defected from the coalition-leading Conservative Party.

In Heywood and Middleton, in the north of the country, the opposition Labour party is expected to win, but it is also facing a UKIP challenge.

The two by-elections are being seen as a key test of public opinion ahead of next May's general election.

Foreign minister of the netherlands Frans Timmermans has come under fire from some of the families of victims aboard the downed malaysian flight mh17, for revealing new evidence.

In a television interview he suggested not everybody died instantly when the plane was allegedly hit by a missile over Ukranian rebel held territory.

He noted one of the bodies was wearing an oxygen mask after impact - a detail some of the victims families said was not included in an initial report.

In a government statement, Timmermans apologized, and admitted he should not have made the statement.
