UKIP wins its first British Parliament seat

Britain's UK Independence Party has won its first seat in the British parliament.


Douglas Carswell, who defected from the Conservative party to join UKIP, won a local election in the seaside town of Clacton.


UKIP's anti-immigration and anti-Europe message has proved popular with some, but this was the party's first test at convincing voters to elect a member of parliament.
