UN warns food aid running out in Syria

The UN has warned that food supplies are running out in Syria.

With UN agency the World Food Program could be forced to stop its
operations in the country in two months if it does not receive extra
funding.

U.S. tobacco companies challenge court-ordered ads admitting lies

The largest tobacco firms in the U.S. are challenging court-ordered advertisements which admit that they deliberately deceived the American public about the dangers of smoking.

In 2012 an appeals court already rejected efforts by the cigarette makers to have the ruling overturned.

"Anti-Facebook" Ello deluged with requests to join

A social media network that's been dubbed the "anti-Facebook" is being deluged with requests from people wanting to join.

Ello pledges neither to show adverts nor sell user data.

UK jets attack first Islamic State targets


The UK's Royal Air Force military planes have launched attacks on two Islamic State targets, which are the first since the British parliament approved air strikes on Friday. 


The two attacks were carried out in Iraq, and were both a success, according to the British Ministry of Defence.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding talks with US President Barack Obama at the White House.
In a joint op-ed in the Washington Post they say they will explore ways to expand collaboration on trade, investment and technology.

US Secret Service chief grilled on security failures

American lawmakers want to know how a veteran with diagnosed mental illness managed to scale the fence, run all the way inside the White House and to the rear of the East Room.

Narendra Modi Visits Gandhi Statue in Washington D.C.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the statue of Mahatma Gandhi outside the Indian Embassy in Washington D.C, on the final day of his four day US trip.

Mr Modi, who was accompanied by India's minister for External Affairs, is also holding formal talks with Barack Obama on Tuesday after the two dined together on Monday evening. 

He'll also meet Secretary of State John Kerry and Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel, and address the US India Business Council.

Afghanistan and US Sign Security Deal

Afghanistan and the United States have signed a security agreement enabling American troops to stay in the country after 2014.

FRESH FIGHTING REPORTED IN EASTERN UKRAINE

INTRO: Ukrainian media reports of fresh fighting in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine despite the September 5 ceasefire. Donetsk rebel leader said his forces returned fire after Ukrainian troops started shelling at them. The continuing shelling has hampered the creation of buffer zones between the fighting sides. Wildlife population 'halves' in 40 years

New evidence suggests populations of species have more than halved in the last 40 years - a figure far worse than previously thought...

The London Zoological Society has published its new Living Planet Index which says populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish have declined by an average of 52 per cent.

Lufthansa pilots strike in Frankfurt

Pilots for Germany's Lufthansa airlines began a 15-hour strike Tuesday at the Frankfurt airport.

Belgium begins trial of alleged jihadist recruiters

Forty six members of an organization called 'Sharia for Belgium' are on trial this week for recruiting jihadists.

A third video of UK hostage John Cantlie has been released by Islamic State militants.

In it, the journalist delivers a script mocking US intervention in Syria and Iraq.

At the end of the film John Cantlie says there will be further messages from him.

It comes as Iraqi forces say they have slowed the advance of IS troops in a key town west of Baghdad.
