China Pulls Further Away from World Bank's Definition of High Income Nation

China's per capita gross national income fell for the first time in nearly 30 years in 2023, according to newly released government data.


It nudges China further away from the World Bank's threshold for categorizing a country as high-income.

More than half of U.S. Democrats want a leader who does not support military aid for Israel

Most voters in President Joe Biden's party want a leader who does not back U.S. military aid for Israel, according to a new Ipsos/Reuters poll.
The President's full support for Israel, in its war against Hamas in Gaza, has angered many people, as the death toll there grows to 30,000.

Death toll in Gaza reach the 30 thousand mark

The death toll in the Israel-Hamas war has now risen to 30 thousand
according to Palestinian health officials.
More than 100 people were killed on Thursday morning after Israeli
troops reportedly opened fire as people pulled flour and canned goods
off of delivery trucks.
In describing the latest figures, the UN's Humanitarian Chief, Martin
Griffiths said, "life is draining out of Gaza at terrifying speed".

Oprah Winfrey to leave WeightWatchers

American TV host Oprah Winfrey says she is stepping down from her role at WeightWatchers.


The TV personality has served on the weight loss company's board of directors for nine years.


In response to the announcement, WeightWatchers' stock plunged 17% on Thursday.

UN criticizes Ghana's anti-LGBTIQ+ laws

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has criticised
Ghana's parliament after it passed a bill making identifying as LGBTQ+
illegal.
The new bill imposes a prison sentence of up to three years for anyone
convicted of identifying as LGBTQ+ and also imposes a maximum
five-year jail term for forming or funding LGBTQ+ groups.
Spokesperson for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human
Rights Ravina Shamdasani says the bill "is profoundly disturbing."

Inflation gauge holds steady in January
