The United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo has handed over its first military base in the east of the country to Congolese security forces. The handover marks the start of the UN troops' gradual withdrawal from the conflict-torn region. The DRC government has asked the UN peacekeepers to leave their country by the end of this year for reportedly failing to end attacks against civilians by rebel groups.
