EU and NATO slam Russian move to recognise breakaway regions

The European Union says it plans to move forward with sanctions after Russia announced it will recognize two breakaway regions in Eastern Ukraine.

 

Moscow's decision is seen as a blow to European efforts toward brokering a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

Putin recognizes independence of Donetsk and Luhansk, raising risk of war

Russian President Vladimir Putin says he will sign a decree formally recognising the independence of two breakaway regions of Eastern Ukraine.


Moscow will treat Donetsk and Luhansk as independent states, no longer part of Ukrainian territory.


The move torpedoes the Minsk Agreements that sought to end war in the Donbas region…and sparks a real possibility of conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The Russian leader asserted that Ukraine is governed by a puppet government controlled by the West.


He said Kyiv wants to develop nuclear weapons that could threaten Russia.


He railed against NATO’s expansion and said the alliance was intent on containing Russia.

Putin says he will decide "today" whether to recognize independence of Donetsk and Luhansk

Russian President Vladimir Putin says he will make a decision today about whether formally to recognize the independence of two breakaway regions of Eastern Ukraine.


His comments came at the end of an extraordinary 90 minute televised meeting of his National Security Council.


Every single member of it backed the idea of recognizing Donetsk and Luhansk as independent…a move that could spark a war on the Russian border with Ukraine.

Welsh Government thinks ending Covid-19 restrictions in England now is 'reckless'

Ukrainian FM in talks with EU counterparts in Brussels
