Democrats officially took back control of the US House of Representatives on Thursday

Their new majority, won in the recent mid term elections, comes with the US government in day 13 of a partial shutdown

Two men arrested amid concern about migrants crossing the English Channel


British police have detained two men on suspicion of helping illegal migrants cross the English Channel.  


The arrests of a 24 year old British man and a 33 year old Iranian man comes amid concern that an increasing number of migrants are crossing the treacherous waters between the UK and France.   From London, Catherine Drew reports.

In US, Democrats poised to take control of House of Representatives

Democrats in the US will formally take control of the House of Representatives later today after their success in November's mid-term elections.


It gives them the chance to launch a fresh series of investigations into Donald Trump's Presidency, and also - if they want - to begin the process of impeachment.

Ethiopian Airways Overshoots Runway at Entebbe Airport

Spain received record number of migrants in 2018

Newly released numbers show 2018 was a record year for migrant arrivals by sea into Spain.

Until now the highest numbers of arrivals into Europe during the migration crisis have been into Greece and Italy.

Hindu groups protest against women entering temple in south India

Right wing Hindu groups have called for a strike in the south Indian state of Kerala after two women in their forties entered a temple which had banned females between the ages of 10 and 50.

One person has died after having stones thrown at him during violent clashes.

US government shutdown enters 13th day

The partial US government shutdown enters its 13th day after a meeting between congressional leaders and President Trump failed to break the deadlock, which is centered on border wall funding.

Democratic and Republican leaders were invited to the the White House's Situation Room where President Trump asked administration officials to "make a plea" for his wall.

Apple Slashes Quarterly Revenue Expectations

Apple slashed its quarterly revenue forecast for the first tie in more than 15 years. The company says it expects revenue of about $84 billion in the last quarter, down from a previous estimate of $89 billion to $93 billion.

Somalia expels UN envoy accused of undermining country's sovereignty

Somalia has expelled the United Nations' top envoy to the country, accusing him of interfering in the country's sovereignty, according to state media.

Clashes in Kerala in south India after women enter Hindu temple

Activists in the state of Kerala in south India have taken to the streets in protest after two women managed to enter a famous Hindu temple, from which women between the ages of 10 and 50 had been banned.
