High-level talks between US and Russia end in stalemate

The US and Russia resumed high-level talks on Monday, but the meeting failed to resolve the row over Russian diplomatic compounds seized by Washington last December.

This was the second time that the US Under Secretary of State and his Russian counterpart met to discuss the compounds in New York and Maryland that were seized by the US late last year, as part of President Obama's reaction to Russia's interference in the 2016 election — a reaction that also included the expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats.

Republicans blame Democrats for health care bill failure

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is the first member of the Trump administration to speak out on the failure of efforts to repeal and replace the legislation nicknamed "Obamacare" - insisting legislative work must continue.

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he wants to proceed with a repeal only bill, an effort that quickly met with significant political resistance.

Vice President Pence says health care must be addressed, despite obstructionism by the Democrats.

U.S. slaps Iran with fresh sanctions over 'malign activities'

The Trump administration has certified to U.S. Congress that Iran is complying with the agreement at restricting its nuclear activities.

US officials believe Tehran is meeting the terms set but the 2015 accord agreed between the U.S. Iran and other world powers.

However, the certification comes as the U.S. State Department announced a new wave of sanctions against Iran for its continued ballistic missile activity and what the U.S. calls its ongoing support of terrorist groups.

Republicans move to repeal "ObamaCare"

U.S. Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell is moving to a simpler piece of legislation which would only repeal - but not replace - the health care legislation nicknamed "ObamaCare."

The Congressional Budget Office has already published an estimate of the impact of a plain repeal of the legislation, including over 30 million Americans losing health care insurance, and rates for premiums increasing over 20 percent.

Senator Mitch McConnell is blaming the Democrats for refusing to compromise.

Trump healthcare bill in trouble as two Republican Senators come out against it

As Republicans in the US Congress battle to repeal and replace Obamacare, two Senators from the party have come out publicly against the Trump administration's healthcare bill.

In a tweet on Monday evening local time, Senator Mike Lee said he and his colleague Senator Jerry Moran do not support the current proposals.

In Washington, Giles Gibson has more:

India's Supreme Court to decide on constitutional validity of national biometric scheme

The Supreme Court will today hear pleas that claim the Aadhar card violates a citizen's right to privacy. Aadhar is the Indian government's mandatory biometric identification system that is used to avail government benefits and file taxes.

Petitioners say they cannot be forced to give their fingerprints and iris scans to the government- calling this a breach of privacy. The government has alleged that the right to privacy is not a fundamental right.

Privacy activists allege that the government's pan-India registration drive exposes all Indian citizens to identity theft, however the government maintains that its databases are secure.
