The Supreme Court will today hear pleas that claim the Aadhar card violates a citizen's right to privacy. Aadhar is the Indian government's mandatory biometric identification system that is used to avail government benefits and file taxes.
Petitioners say they cannot be forced to give their fingerprints and iris scans to the government- calling this a breach of privacy. The government has alleged that the right to privacy is not a fundamental right.
Privacy activists allege that the government's pan-India registration drive exposes all Indian citizens to identity theft, however the government maintains that its databases are secure.
