North Korea launches ferry service to Russia's far east

LEAD:


A ferry service from North Korea to the Russian city of Vladivostok has been launched to develop links and boost economic cooperation between the tee two countries.  The ferry service is expected to carry up to 200 passengers and 1000 tonnes of cargo six times a month between Vladivostok and North Korea. Julia Lyubova reports from Moscow.

India's environment minister dead at 60

India's environment minister, Anil Dave (PRON. DAH-VAY),  has passed away, aged 60.

He was understood to have been unwell in recent months, although official details of the cause of his death have yet to be revealed.

ICJ verdict on Indian national's execution today

The International Court of Justice will today rule on a death sentence handed out to an Indian national by a Pakistani military court.

The Indian national has been sentenced to death by Pakistan over charges of spying. India accuses Pakistan of convicting Kulbhushan Jadhav in a 'farcical' trial.

The verdict could be another flashpoint between the two nuclear armed neighbours.

Dozens of MS-13 Gang Members Nabbed In LA Raids

Twenty-one people accused of being part of the notoriously violent
MS-13 gang were arrested in Los Angeles Wednesday, in an early morning
sweep that came after a more than two-year racketeering investigation.
Those detained were among 44 gang suspects facing federal charges
including murder and racketeering. Last month President Donald Trump
singled out MS13 as "one of the gravest threats to American safety."

Australian Tax Official implicated in $165 million fraud

The Australian Taxation Office Deputy Commissioner Michael Cranston will be charged over a major tax fraud allegedly involving his son.
Mr Cranston has been issued with a court attendance notice for allegedly publicly abusing his position as a public officer in a senior official of the Commonwealth of Australia, according to the Australian Federal Police.
Mr Cranston's 30-year-old son Adam and eight other people have been arrested over a $165 million tax fraud investigation.

Special Counsel Appointed to head Trump-Russia Investigation

Wall Street Plummets As US Political Uncertainty Grows

Stock markets in the US have seen their worst falls for months amid the continuing political turmoil surrounding President Donald Trump.

The major indexes saw sustained rallies after Mr. Trump's election, with investors hoping he would bring in tax reform and lighten Wall Street regulations.

But the row over the firing of FBI Director James Comey has seen the dollar erase most of the gains it made since November's election, and our New York correspondent Lorna Shaddick says there's a new mood of investor pessimism.

State department condemns Turkey over violent attack on Washington protesters

U.S. police in the nation's capital say eleven people were injured on Wednesday night, when supporters of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan (and his bodyguards) charged a group of protestors outside the Turkish embassy.

Honduras: authorities transfer thousands of inmates to more secure facilities

Government authorities in Honduras have transferred more than 700 gang members to a new maximum security prison. 

The move is part of an initiative aimed at relocating some 2,000 inmates considered to be highly dangerous. Authorities say they want to prevent these jails from serving as comand centers for criminal activity.

Lawmakers want memos, documents from FBI, White House

The chairs of the Senate Intelligence Committee are calling upon James Comey and separately, the White House, to turn over all documents tied to any conversations and meetings between the now fired FBI director and U.S. President Donald Trump.

This follows a similar request from the House side of the U.S. Congress, and reports from the New York Times that James Comey wrote detailed memos about all meetings, while President Trump has suggested he recorded meetings.
