Rex Tillerson confirmed as US Secretary of State

US Senators have confirmed former ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as the
new Secretary of State.

During confirmation hearings, Tillerson, a controversial pick by
President Trump, was questioned over his lack of experience in
international politics - and his history of cozy relations with
Russia.

British MPs pass Brexit bill

British MPs have voted overwhelmingly to allow Prime Minister Theresa May to begin the process of Brexit, the country's departure from the European Union. 

MPs voted by 498 votes to 114 to back the governments European Union Bill,  which paves the way for the triggering of article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.

The bill will face more scrutiny next week from both Houses of Parliament where lawmakers are likely to try to add amendments to the legislation. 

The 114 who voted against it were  made up of rebel Labour MPs who voted against their leadership.    The Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party also rejected it.  

Labour MP Dave Anderson said it was a difficult decision for many of his peers.

British MPs back giving UK PM power to launch Brexit

In an initial vote, British MPs voted overwhelmingly to give Prime Minister Theresa May the authority to launch negotiations to leave the European Union, the so-called Brexit.

The Prime Mininster wants to start talks by the end of March, but the legislation faces further action in the Commons and the House of Lords.

The results of the vote were received with a cheer.

Rival Cyprus leaders ask UN to prep peace talks in March - envoy

The rival leaders of Cyprus have asked the United Nations to prepare for follow-up peace talks in early March, according to the UN envoy for the country.


The last meeting held in Geneva in January failed to resolve differences.

US Federal Reserve leaves interest rates alone

America's central bankers have decided to leave key interest rates alone for now, noting moderate growth in the U.S. economy.

White House says Iran is now "on notice"


White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn says the United States is officially putting Iran "on notice." 

The announcement came after Iran tested a medium-range ballistic missile on Sunday. 

Mr. Flynn did not specify what steps the US will be taking by placing Iran "on notice", but said more details are to come.

Russia accuse several people of treason

direct role in hacking America's presidential campaign.

Ban Ki-moon pulls out of South Korea Presidency race

Korea.

GOP should go nuclear for Gorsuch - Pres. Trump

Sessions nomination passes out of committee

The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved Jeff Sessions to be the next U.S. Attorney General on a strict party line vote, 11-9.

Democrats remained adamantly opposed to the nominaton through the vote, and Senators have used obscure committee rules to stall other nominations, including Treasury Secretary nominee Steven Mnuchin.

The vote led by Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley ended in chaos and protests.

Reporters are asking the Senate leadership about the prospects for confirmation for Judge Neil Gorsuch, U.S. President Donald Trump's nominee to serve on the U.S. Surpreme Court.

Democrats have indicated, they are likely to try to block the process, partly in retaliation for the Republicans blocking the confirmation process for Merrick Garland under President Obama.

Three US states join legal action against travel ban

Three more US States have joined lawsuits challenging President Trump's temporary immigration ban.

New York, Massachusetts and Virginia will add their resources to legal challenges claiming that the president's executive order is unconstitutional.

The immigration directive indefinitely bars Syrian refugees from entering the country and temporarily bans entry for people from seven Muslim-majority countries.

Portuguese court throws out McCann family libel case

The Portuguese Supreme Court has thrown out a libel case brought by the British parents of Madeleine McCann who disappeared in 2007 while on holiday in Portugal. 

The McCanns brought the case after a former Portuguese detective published a book alleging Madeleine's parents were involved in the disappearance of their daughter.
