The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved Jeff Sessions to be the next U.S. Attorney General on a strict party line vote, 11-9.
Democrats remained adamantly opposed to the nominaton through the vote, and Senators have used obscure committee rules to stall other nominations, including Treasury Secretary nominee Steven Mnuchin.
The vote led by Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley ended in chaos and protests.
The voice of the committee clerk:
IN: "Mister chairman...
OUT: (shouting fade out)"
DUR: 27
In the final moments of testimony, Senator Al Franken, a Democrat from Minnesota, insisted he could not vote for Jeff Sessions because he does not believe he will uphold the U.S. Constitution.
IN: "But Chairman Grassley...
OUT: ...voting against him."
DUR: 26
