UN Security Council backs ECOWAS efforts on Gambia political standoff

The United Nations has thrown its full backing behind West African states calling for a transfer of power in Gambia.

The council on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution expressing support for the Economic Community of West African states — or ECOWAS — in its efforts to ensure Gambia's new elected president Adama Barrow assumes power from Yahya Jammeh.

Treasury pick Mnuchin questioned by US Senators for foreclosures & offshore accounts

Plan in place for US foreign policy as transition continues

The incoming Trump administration has requested some 50 key aides from the Obama administration to ensure continuity of operations during the transition.

U.S. Undersecretary of Political Affairs Thomas Shannon will essentially serve as acting U.S. Secretary of State until Rex Tillerson is confirmed and sworn into office.

U.S. State Department spokesman John Kirby is confident American diplomatic operations will continue, even if U.S. foreign policy may change in the future.

Obama shortens sentences of 300 drug offenders

US President Barack Obama has commuted the sentences of over three hundred prisoners convicted of drug offenses, during his last day in office.

This brings the total of commutations he's issued up to one thousand seven hundred and fifteen - more than any other American president in history.

US backs Senegal operations to oust Gambia's Jammeh

The U.S. is backing military operations led by Senegal to oust Gambian strongman Yahya Jammeh.

The new president of the Gambia, Adama Barrow, was sworn into office at his country's embassy in Dakar.

For now, Washington is voicing support for the efforts, says U.S. State Department Spokesman John Kirby.

Mnuchin faces hardline questions from US Democrats, defends foreclosure modifcations

During the confirmation hearings for US Secretary of the Treasury,
Steve Mnuchin, spoke against accusations that he was the 'foreclosure
king' for operating OneWest Bank in the wake of the housing crisis.

US Democrats fired questions after learning on Wednesday that Mnuchin
had not disclosed a Cayman Island Fund, and other holdings ahead of
his hearing.
