Yahoo reveals size of 2014 hacking attack, blames "state-sponsored actor"

Internet giant Yahoo has revealed that as many as 500 million accounts were hacked in 2014 by what the company calls a "state-sponsored actor".

It says it's working with law enforcement agencies in the US and is encouraging users to check the security of their accounts.

White House Urges Charlotte Protesters To Remain Peaceful, Dismisses Trump Call To Expand Stop and Frisk


The White House has urged protestors angered by the fatal police shooting of an African American man in Charlotte, North Carolina, to remain peaceful.

Press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that the protestors are raising legitimate concerns about racial disparities in the criminal justice system, but should not resort to violence.

Police shootings become issue in US Presidential election

Violent protests in the southern American city of Charlotte have become an issue in the US election, with Republican candidate Donald Trump saying President Obama has failed to fix the racial divide in the country.

There have been two nights of riots in Charlotte following the police killing of a black man – the latest in a series of such shootings across America.

Mr Trump told a rally in Pittsburgh that America's reputation had been damaged by the riots, and that he would crack down on urban violence.

Charlotte police will not release shooting video

The police chief of Charlotte, North Carolina, says authorities do not plan to publicly release video footage of the death of Keith Lamont Scott.

A police officer fatally shot Scott on Tuesday, after he allegedly refused to drop a gun during an interaction with authorities.

Police Chief Kerr Putney says Scott's family has asked to view the video, and their request will be accomodated.

The family claims Scott was holding a book, not a gun. Chief Putney says the video does not provide conclusive visual proof that Scott was holding a gun, but that other evidence supports him being armed.

When questioned by reporters on his decision not to release the video, Mr Putney said he "never promised full transparency."

Violent protests have rocked Charlotte in the wake of the shooting. 44 people were arrested overnight on charges ranging from assault to breaking and entering. Police say there was significant looting and property damage.

One civilian is in critical condition after being shot during the protests. Police chief Kerr Putney says it's unclear at this time who shot him.

In all, 9 civilians and 5 police officers sustained injuries overnight.

Police did use gas on the protestors, in an effort to dispell the crowds.

A state of emergency has been declared in the city.

Ahead of the CITES conference on endangered species in Johannesburg, Prince William has voiced his concerns over the Illegal Wildlife Trade.


Speaking at an event in London, alongside contributors from Japan and South Africa, he urged global governments to work together and do more to put a stop to the IWT.

Prince William speaks about Illegal Wildlife Trade ahead of CITES

The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, has addressed concerns over the Illegal Wildlife Trade ahead of a conference in South Africa which will be attended by delegates from all over the world.


The 17th meeting of parties to the Convention for International Trade in Endangered Species, or CITES, will discuss the continuing threat to any of the world's species, including elephants and rhinos.


The Illegal Wildlife trade is recognised as the fourth largest transnational crime by value and is estimated to be worth up to 20 billion dollars each year. As well as endangering animals, it also fuels corruption and violence.


Speaking in London, Prince William said the time to act is now and called on all countries to work together to put a stop to the IWT.

New inquiry beefed up to investigate British soldiers in Afghanistan

A British newspaper claims the government has established a new inquiry into the actions of UK soldiers in Afghanistan which could mean some facing criminal investigations.
