Police shootings become issue in US Presidential election

Violent protests in the southern American city of Charlotte have become an issue in the US election, with Republican candidate Donald Trump saying President Obama has failed to fix the racial divide in the country.

There have been two nights of riots in Charlotte following the police killing of a black man – the latest in a series of such shootings across America.

Mr Trump told a rally in Pittsburgh that America's reputation had been damaged by the riots, and that he would crack down on urban violence.

Police video of the shooting has not yet been released. Mr Trump has been a vocal supporter of the police in the past, but he appeared to be more conciliatory as he tries to court the black vote in America
