Russian special forces kill militants in St Petersburg and Moscow region

LEAD:

Russian special forces killed at least 6 suspected militants in raids in St Petersburg and near Moscow.  Russia's Investigating Committee said the militants were on a wanted list of suspected members of a militant group in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region. Julia Lyubova reports from Moscow.

PNG Manus Island detention centre to close - no third nation settlement available

Australia's Immigration Minister Peter Dutton is adamant that the more than 800 asylum seekers on Manus Island won't be going anywhere but back to their own nations or start new lives in Papua New Guinea.

Two US Olympic swimmers taken off plane

Two swimmers from the US Olympic Team have been taken off a flight home, when trying to leave Brazil.

Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger were part of a group who said they were robbed in Rio last week, but local police have disputed the claim.

US suggests Russia has violated UN resolution

Lawyers at the U.S. State Department are reviewing whether Russia has violated United Nations resolutions by launching bombing runs into Syria from Iranian air bases.

U.N. Security Council resolution 2231 prohibits the supply, sale and transfer of combat aircraft to Iran, but Moscow says it is using its own aircraft, with Tehran's permission to take off from an Iranian airbase.

At the U.S. State Department, deputy spokesman Mark Toner said Russia is exacerbating the problems in Syria and Washington is looking into possible violations.

Swimmers should cooperate with Brazillian law enforcement

The U.S. State Department says the American Olympic swimmers should cooperate with Brazilian law enforcement, even though there are reports, Ryan Lochte has already flown back to the U.S.

A Brazillian judge has ordered four American swimmers to remain in Rio, and their passports confiscated, after questions about their report, they were robbed at gunpoint leaving a French hospitality house in the middle of the night after the swim meet concluded.

At the U.S. State Department, deputy spokesman Mark Toner said, in general, the swimmers should cooperate.

UN chief launches investigation into July 11 attack in Juba, South Sudan

The United Nations is launching a special investigation into a July 11 attack on foreign aid workers in the South Sudan capital of Juba.


An earlier fact-finding mission found that the attackers had raped and beaten aid workers and civilians, and killed a local journalist, and that calls for help to a nearby UN peacekeeping force went unanswered.

North Korean defector confirmed by South Korea


South Korean officials have confirmed a North Korean diplomat who had been living in London for 10 years has defected and is under government protection in South Korea.

AL-SHABAAB 'NOW A REGIONAL THREAT'
