US Defense Secretary Says Russia Has 'Losing Strategy' In Syria

US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said Russia is pursuing a "losing
strategy" in Syria, and that carrying out airstrikes will only worsen
the conflict on the ground. Carter addressed Spanish military
officials at Madrid's Center for Strategic Studies and Defense, at the
start of a five-day trip to Europe.

OSBORNE VOWS UK-EU REFORM

Britain will succeed in securing significant reform of its relationship with the European Union, according to its finance minister George Osborne.

He's used a keynote speech at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester to insist the EU must change, or face stagnation.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to win reform of the EU before holding a referendum on Britain's membership of it.

But some member states are threatening to block his reform plans.

Portugal's ruling party retains power

Portugal's centre-right Prime Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, has been reelected in an election that was widely seen as a referendum on four years of austerity.

Wall St. Watching For Trade, Jobs Data


In the week ahead, Wall Street investors will keep their eyes fixed on data, as they know that is what the Federal Reserve is digesting as they inch closer to a decision about raising interest rates in the US. Trade numbers out early in the week is considered one of the strongest data points the Fed will receive ahead of their October meeting, with jobless claims out later projected to confirm strength in the US economy.

US admits responsibility for Kunduz hospital attack

The US military has confirmed that it was responsible for an attack in Afghanistan that badly damaged a hospital in the embattled city of Kunduz leaving at least 16 people dead.


The Pentagon says its forces were targeting militants in the area.


At least 50 people are being treated for injuries.
