Vladimir Putin says Bashar al-Assad is ready to hold parliamentary elections in war-torn country

Russian president Vladimir Putin says Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could share power with what he called "healthy" opposition and that the Syrian leader is ready to hold snap parliamentary elections in the country. Nearly half of Syria's population is displaced or made refugees by a bloody four-year conflict in the country, according to the UN. Anya Ardayeva reports from Moscow.

UK TO ACCEPT EXTRA SYRIAN REFUGEES

The UK is working on a plan to accept more refugees as Europe's migrant crisis continues.

It follows growing pressure on UK Prime Minister David Cameron to do more on the issue.

Mr Cameron spoke of being 'deeply moved' after seeing pictures of a drowned Syrian boy on a Turkish beach.

It's understood he will announce plans to accept thousands more Syrian refugees from UN camps.

UK correspondent Olly Barratt says in that sense he can argue this is not a complete climbdown on government policy.

HUNGARIAN MPS DISCUSS MIGRANT ACTION

Hungarian MPs are voting (on Friday) on whether to increase border controls, as a migrant stand-off with police near Budapest continues.

People who had boarded a train from Budapest refused to then be forced off at a refugee camp outside the Hungarian capital.

Hungarian lawmakers are also discussing whether a state of emergency should be called, and whether to create new holding camps for migrants.

Many of those in Hungary have fled the civil war in Syria and want to make it to countries like Germany and Austria to seek asylum.

Australian PM uses image of dead child to justify boat turnbacks

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has again repeated his mantra of "stopping the boats" while speaking about the tragic drowning of a toddler who's body washed up on a beach in Turkey this week
Mr Abbott says images of the Syrian boy show the importance of stopping asylum-seeker boats and was thankful his government had stopped what he called illegal migration.
Mr Abbott failed to offer any sympathy to the dead child's family rather says the image of him justifies the need for tough border protection policies.

CAMERON PROMISES UK ACTION ON REFUGEES

British Prime Minister David Cameron says he was 'deeply moved' by the pictures of a dead Syrian boy on a Turkish beach, and that the UK will live up to its 'moral responsibilities'.

It follows criticism of Mr Cameron domestically and from some European allies over his government's response to the European migrant crisis.

On Wednesday he had insisted taking more refugees into Britain was not the answer.

But an online petition for the UK to accept more people fleeing Syria and other countries for Europe has now attracted enough support to make it eligible for a debate in Britain's Parliament.

And UK finance minister George Osborne says the UK is doing its utmost to address the issue.

Trump under pressure to sign Republican 'presidential pledge'

Hungarian prime minister defends his country's position on EU refugee crisis

The Hungarian Prime minister Victor Orban has taken a defensive stance at a press conference in Brussels saying the refugee crisis is essentially a problem for Germany.

Hungary has been heavily criticised by the European Union for building a razor wire fence on its Serbian border and has prevented refugees from leaving by closing a train station in the capital Budapest.

The EU says Hungary is turning its back on the bloc's commitment to human rights.

Well over 100 thousand people a months are entering the EU every month at the moment - seeking sanctuary from war torn countries they have fled like Syria, Iraq, Eritrea and Afghanistan.
