Trade deals take center stage

The Obama administration is set to make a major push to get three trade deals completed with a key Congressional vote expected this week.

The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the African Growth and Opportunity act are in the midst of negotiations.

Eurozone finance ministers meeting on Greece

Finance ministers from the single currency eurozone are meeting in Brussels Monday for crunch talks about Greece debt renegotiations.

Security level increased at US military bases

The Pentagon has ordered an increase in security at all North American US military bases for the first time in four years, in part due to threats from the Islamic State group.

A spokesperson said the order is not due to any one specific threat, but due to an increasingly challenging security climate around the world.

Cameron returns to Downing Street, appoints Cabinet


In Britain, Prime Minister David Cameron has been appointing his  Cabinet after a shock election victory that handed his Conservative party a small majority in the House of Commons. 

The results saw three major party heads resign in the wake of their losses.  Ed Miliband stepped down from the Labour leadership, Nick Clegg will no longer lead the much-depleted Liberal Democrats and Nigel Farage has quit as head of the anti-immigration, anti-Europe UK Independence Party.

Countries around the world are marking to the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe or V-E Day Friday, the day when the Allied parties formally accepted the surrender of Nazi Germany.

The agreement led to parties and celebrations in the streets in the US, UK, and elsewhere, as families celebrated the end of a six year war.

In Washington, President Obama paid tribute to the heroism of those  who took part in the war effort - on the front lines and at home.

US justice chief launches probe into Baltimore police department

US Attorney General Loretta Lynch has ordered a federal investigation of the Baltimore Police department.

The move comes in response to alleged police brutality and discrimination, following the recent death of Freddie Gray, a young black man who died in police custody.

The US justice chief said relations between the community and the police was one of the most challenging issues in modern day America.

The probe was announced as Baltimore reported nine shootings in a 24 hour period on Thursday, including two that were fatal.

Loretta Lynch signaled that the investigation needs to get to the bottom of police treatment of blacks.

Turkey and Russia agree date for Turkish Stream natural gas pipeline
