MERKEL IN DC FOR UKRAINE TALKS

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is in Washington for talks on Ukraine amid reports of a rift with the White House.

The US is considering sending weapons to the Kiev government as it battles pro-Russian rebels, but Germany opposes the idea.

Angela Merkel will brief US President Barack Obama on peace proposals France and Germany are attempting to broker betweek Ukraine and Russia's leaders.

Fighting continues in eastern Ukraine between government troops and rebels it claims are armed and supported by Moscow.

Sir Gerald Howarth MP is a former UK defence minister - he's pessimistic about Angela Merkel's push for peace because of the ambitions of Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel is in Washington for talks with President Obama on the crisis in Ukraine.

The visit comes just 48 hours before a 4-nation summit sparked by increased violence in Eastern Ukraine.

US increasingly isolated over lethal assistance to Ukraine

A four-nation summit on the crisis in Ukraine will take place on Wednesday in Belarus.

Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France will meet to try and hammer out a new peace plan, following the visit to Moscow on Friday by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande.

Britain became the latest European government to decide against providing the Ukrainian government with lethal assistance.

But the US government says it's continuing to think about the possibility of extending more military aid to Ukraine.

Nigerian elections postponed due to Boko Haram threat

Convicted Man Featured in Podcast "Serial" Granted Appeal

A Maryland court has agreed to hear an appeal by a man whose murder conviction was investigated in a podcast that became a cultural phenomenon.

Adnan Syed (ODD-nahn SI-yed) is serving a life sentence for the murder of his former girlfriend.

Rachel Silverman reports the case received renewed attention after it was featured in the podcast Serial, which became the first podcast to reach five million downloads.

Russian backed rebels reportedly gear up for further offensives

Russian backed militants in eastern Ukraine have reportedly been massing their forces for attacks on Ukrainian populations centres.

Ukraine's military also reports that five of its soldiers have been killed and 26 wounded in the most recent fighting.

Hollande, Merkel, Putin talks end without a word of agreement on Ukraine crisis

A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin says that talks in Moscow between President Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande were, 'constructive'.

But no word of agreement was reached in resolving the conflict in Ukraine, where fighting has escalated recently.

US wants to increase pressure on Russia if Ukraine deal not accepted

The Obama administration says it is working with its partners on ways to increase pressure on Russia if Moscow does not accept the peace proposals for Ukraine.

French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have travelled to Russia to deliver Kiev's proposals which would return the status quo to the agreement reached last September.

US questions ISIS hostage claim

The Obama administration is questioning the claim made by the Islamic State organization, that an American held hostage was killed in a Jordanian airstrike.

The White House says it is deeply concerned by the reports that one-time aid worker Kayla Mueller when the building she was being held in collapsed.

The American government says it cannot confirm claims that a female American hostage has been killed in a coalition air strike in Syria.

The Islamic State group said on Friday that an American hostage had been killed by a Jordanian strike.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf told journalists in Washington DC that it was not possible to confirm the Islamic State claim, but she said America was doing everything it could to free hostages in the region.
