President Obama Sets Out $4 trillion Budget

US President Barack Obama has been laying out his budget priorities, proposing to spend 4 trillion dollars in the 2016 budget year beginning  on 1st October. 

His programme includes boosting taxes on higher income Americans and corporations while giving tax relief to the middle class, as well as schemes to improve US infrastructure and provide two years of free community college.

He'll also close a tax loophole that currently allows US companies to avoid paying taxes on profits kept overseas. 

The President said he wants America to be a country that gives everyone a fair chance:

Obama corporate tax plan sets up budget battle

American companies which keep trillions of dollars in profits stashed overseas would be subject to a one-time tax bill, under a plan being put forward by the US president.

Former German president Weizsäcker dies

Greece finance minister seeks international support for renegotiating debt deal

Greece's new finance minister Yanis Varoufakis (PRON: va-roo-fa-kiss) insists he will prioritize all Europeans while he tries to renegotiate Greece's debt.

GREEK FM SEEKS ANTI-AUSTERITY SUPPORT

Greece's finance minister Yanis Varoufakis says his country needs a new debt deal within months.

He's on a tour of European capitals to seek support for the new Greek government's anti-austerity position.

France's finance minister Michel Sapin indicated Paris would be ready to help Greece come to a deal with creditors.

But Mr Varoufakis is not planning a visit to Berlin on this trip - where there is opposition to any new bailout arrangements.

On Monday he visits London and Rome.

GRESTE TO 'WORK FOR FAHMY AND MOHAMED' CAIRO RELEASE

The family of journalist Peter Greste says he will not rest until his Al Jazeera colleagues are released from prison in Egypt.

Mr Greste was deported from Egypt on Sunday after 400 days behind bars - having been accused of spreading false news and aiding the Muslim Brotherhood.

His colleagues Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed remain in prison.

Mr Fahmy may reportedly be released soon, but fears remain for Mr Mohamed, who only holds Egyptian nationality. 

Speaking in Brisbane, Peter Greste's mother Lois said he has worked hard to stay strong during the last 400 days.

More die in battles in eastern Ukraine

At least forty people have reportedly been killed in some of the latest fighting in eastern Ukraine.


Ukrainian officials say 15 soldiers and 12 civilians have died and Russian backed militants say there have been 13 casualties in territory controlled by them.

Actress Geraldine McEwan dies in London, aged 82

The British actress Geraldine McEwan has died in London at the age of 82.


She suffered a stroke last year from which she never fully recovered.


She'll be best remembered by television audiences for playing Miss Marple, Agatha Christie's elderly sleuth, from 2004 until 2009.


Other TV successes included "Mapp and Lucia" and "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit"


But she had an extensive stage career as well that spanned decades, and spent several seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company and then Britain's Royal National Theatre.


Speaking in 2013, she remembered the moment Sir Lawrence Olivier invited her to join the National Theatre.
