U.S. Commemorates Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. are being
celebrated across the US. Monday marks a federal holiday in honor of
the American civil rights icon who was famous for using non-violent
resistance to push for the end of segregation laws dividing blacks and
whites. King was the youngest person to receive a Nobel Peace Prize
for his work in 1964, but was assassinated years later at the age of
thirty-nine.

US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle are honoring the day
with a community service project in the nation's capital, joining
young members of the city to talk about King's legacy.

Speaking at a wreath laying ceremony at the memorial to King in
Washington DC, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh [[ Jay ]] Johnson said
King's words were not popular, but his actions changed history.

Muslim leaders in UK criticise letter from MPs

A letter sent by  to Muslim leaders in the UK after the Paris attacks in which Government Ministers urge  the community to do more to route out extremism, has received criticism from many muslims.

Those within the faith believe the letter suggests that Ministers see Islam and muslims as being inherently apart from the British identity.

The government has hit back at these comments saying that muslim leaders missed the point of the communique, as our UK correspondent Natalie Powell reports.

FALLING OIL PRICES 'TO FEED INTO CONSUMER SPENDING RISE'

Falling oil prices will significantly boost the UK economy as consumers spend more elsewhere, according to a leading economic forecaster.

The EY item club says lower petrol costs will help an economic recovery beginning to lose momentum as a result of the stagnant eurozone economy.

It also now expects UK interest rates to stay on hold at record lows into 2016, as inflation falls.

Danny Cox of stockbroker Hargreaves Lansdown says all of that is now expected to feed into GDP growth this year.
