Google shuts down news search in Spain

Google is shutting down its news search service in Spain before the start of a new intellectual property law.

The law will allow Spanish publications to charge online services for displaying content in search results.

Protests in Paris over French economic reforms

Thousands of protesters have hit the streets of Paris following the announcement of economic reforms by the French government.

76 ARRESTED AT LONDON ERIC GARNER DEMO

76 people have been arrested after a protest at a London shopping centre over the death of Eric Garner in New York.

The so-called 'die-in' at London's Westfield mall in west London attracted around 600 people in total.

The demonstration was held in solidarity with rallies in the US since Eric Garner died during an arrest in New York.

Many taking part held banners saying, 'black lives matter'.

Rouble falls further amid speculation of Central Bank intervention

The Russian rouble currency has lost further value against the dollar as global oil prices continue to decline.


Russia's central bank is meeting on Thursday amid speculation that it may further raise interest rates to try and help the rouble.

Putin in India to sign major energy, defense deals

Russian President Vladimir Putin is in India for a day of talks with the Indian Prime Minister as well as government and industry officials.


The visit comes with Russia facing isolation and sanctions from the West over the conflict in Ukraine.


Mr Putin is expected to sign a number of major contracts during his visit, particularly in the defense and energy sectors.

In marking Human Rights Day, top United Nations officials said the universal reach of human rights should not be restricted to just one day alone, but extended to every day of every year.

White House demurs over calls for CIA prosecutions

The White House has refused to be drawn on calls for former CIA and other government officials to be prosecuted over the use of torture in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks on America.

The United Nations is demanding the prosecution of those officials responsible for the torture revealed in a US Senate report on Tuesday, and as our Washington Correspondent Simon Marks reports, there have been similar calls on Capitol Hill.

Brazil releases a report on regime brutality

Deal reached to keep US government funded

Malala receives her Nobel Prize

The 17 year old Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai has received the Nobel Peace Prize along with her co-winner.....child rights campaigner Kailash Satyarthi from India during a ceremony in Norway. 

The Nobel committee described both laureates as "champions of peace".

Mr Satyarthi described the prize was "a great opportunity" to  work against child slavery.

Ms Yousafzai was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen in October 2012 for campaigning for girls' education.

She said the joint prize was an opportunity for India and Pakistan to work together.

EU willing to sanction Russia further

European Union leaders say they are prepared to offer more support money for Ukraine and will slap further sanctions on Russia if necessary.

Prosecution wins right to appeal Pistorius verdict

INTRO: Prosecutors have won their bid to appeal the culpable homicide verdict handed down to Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. The State will now seek a murder conviction. Pistorius was found guilty of the lesser crime and sentenced to five years in prison. He could be eligible for parole in about 9 months.
